A Generation That Ignores Their Parents' Opinions
Different generations often have interesting characteristics
. For the Baby Boomers it was their large numbers. For the current generation of young adults, they have several unique characteristics, but one imparticular that is noteworthy.
Since the beginning of time, children have been taught to obey their parents. Obeying their parents was what kept them alive. Parents in the Wild West taught their children to hunt. Parents during the Great Depression taught their kids how to conserve things and save money. Parents were usually respected. Even after kids grew up and left the home, they still valued and listened to their parent's advice.
Today, there is a shift away from the longstanding respect for parents, especially when it comes to their opinions and beliefs. Most people assume teenagers will treat their parents disrespectfully. It's also not unusual to place the parents in a lonely nursing home when they grow older. But most importantly, it's seen as shallow and naive to hold the same values and beliefs as parents.
Of course young adults should examine for themselves what they believe, whether it be politics, religion, or parenting. However, many young adults are finding they cannot even hold similar beliefs as their parents without being ridiculed. It is seen as immature and shallow to agree with parents on certain issues. People often see this as blindly accepting things passed down from the parents.
Parents have years of valuable advice and wisdom that can be passed onto their children. While nothing parents say should be accepted without some consideration, they usually have valuable advice. For instance, parents know the importance of the family, the home, and of keeping them both safe. They also know the importance of a home security system. Parents may not be perfect, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be respected.
