6 Steps to Better Time Management

It is a common complaint to not have enough time available to do everything that is on our to-do lists. People simply have too many tasks to tackle in the time available. They feel overwhelmed, sense a lack of control and experience increased stress levels. There are many simple steps we can do to alleviate our stress as it relates to time management. Most people never spend time planning their weeks or days, and as a result feel loss of control over their schedules. This article provides six key steps we all can take to get more control over our days and weeks, to alleviate the stress we feel, and to become just that much more productive. Identify the areas in your life Ask yourself what roles you are playing in your life. In other words. Are you the CEO in your company? Are you a father or a mother? Are you an active church member? Write all the roles in your life down on paper. Set weekly goals Once you have listed all your roles in your life, identify those roles that are important for the week ahead of you and set clear goals, as to what you would like or need to achieve in that week. Start with the most important role. It is important to note, that not every role will have to have a goal every week. Schedule your activities Now that you have clear goals for the week, schedule every activity that you need to do to achieve your goal. Set aside blocks of time on a calendar to do these activities. As your calendar fills with your activities, you will soon see if you have over-planned your week, or if you have more room to achieve additional goals throughout the week. Dont forget to schedule your private time as well. Lunch with friends, dates, etc. Develop your schedule BEFORE the week starts Dont wait to develop your schedule until the week starts. Develop it at the end of the week. This way you can hit the ground running once you get to the office Monday morning. Leave Buffers It is important to leave buffers of time every day. Unforeseen things happen every day. Buffers of one or two hours will give you enough flexibility to move activities around. Review your schedule daily - At the end of the day review all you have achieved and reschedule things you have not achieved. Move activities around to make sure you achieve the goals you set before the week started. Follow these simple steps and you will gain major control over your schedule and will be able to achieve most of what you set out to achieve.About the Author:
