3D TV Purchasing Guide - It's Not All About the Inches

When people set out to buy a new television the first thing they will want to make sure they look at is the largest screen possible, whilst it is great to have a large TV screen that rival some cinemas sometimes a larger TV screen may not be the most important factor to consider (or even be the affordable option). This is especially true when looking at the very latest 3D televisions as there are more important stats to be on the lookout for.

Plasma or LCD?

This is one choice many people have had to make for a number of years since the flat screen TVs have come about; both have their advantages such as LCD's not being prone to ghosting that happens with Plasma TVs. But Plasma TVs don't suffer from the lag/stuttering issues that LCD TV sets can be prone to. This makes the plasma TV more recommendable for buyers when you are looking to get the best possible experience when buying a 3D TV.

The refresh rate

Kind of related to the plasma/LCD debate is the refresh rate of the TV set. Since 3D images effectively halve the speed of the picture with each eye being shown an image alternately in order to maintain the proper speed of the movie or sports you are watching the refresh rate of your TV will need to be more than double the regular rate of 60 Hz. A lot of 120 Hz 3D TVs are now available. As well as those that go even higher to provide the best possible experience when watching any 3D broadcasts, especially sports and fast moving images where a quick refresh rate would help provide a smoother picture.

Obviously buying a 3D TV will be pretty useless if you don't have any sort of 3D source to watch it with. Whilst 3D TV channels and broadcasts are fairly limited right now there are other 3D sources such as the Sony Playstation 3 that has 3D movies on Blu-Ray but also a growing range of 3D games as well. A lot of 3D Blu-Ray players are now being released too, for now this is the extent of 3D material but as more channels and service are introduced there will likely be others to consider.

So as we've seen in this discussion about what matters most when buying a 3D TV, size isn't everything. Obviously having a large screen will help the 3D effect but this could be nullified if you haven't considered arguably more important aspects like the refresh rate then your viewing experience may be impaired and could mean regrets about your new TV further down the line.
