Quite often with sites making those claims, you'll see a little small print underneath saying "Results not typical" or "Sample size: 11". What this means is that one person may have lost that amount, but most likely everybody else on the diet lost a much smaller amount.

Some diets do genuinely cause you to lose a large amount of weight in a short time at least initially. Atkins, for example, is well-known for dieters regularly losing 10-15lbs in the first two weeks of the plan. However, a lot of this initial loss is water weight, and subsequent weight loss is likely to be much slower. This in itself can be discouraging.

Shows like The Biggest Loser exaggerate this need we have for fast weight loss. Contestants on the show must compete to lose the most amount of weight each week the person who loses the least is out of the show. This can lead to people standing on the scales saying "I only lost 5lbs this week, it's just not good enough!" But the show is an artificial condition the contestants are penned up in the house with nothing to do except go to the gym. They aren't working, taking care of family, distracted by TV or the internet, or any other leisure. They get up every morning at 6, go the to the gym, eat breakfast, go to the gym, eat lunch, go to the gym, eat dinner They are working out for up to 10 hours a day, of course they can burn 7000 calories in a day and lose 10lbs a week. Most of us don't have that luxury and must settle for something more realistic!

One common pitfall that dieters fall into is to think that in order to increase the rate at which they lose weight, they should drop their calorie intake to very low. This may work for a week or two, but simply can't be sustained. Once you go below 1200 calories, you will lose the energy you need to maintain your daily routine, let alone add more exercise. You will be starving hungry all the time and far more likely to go off plan.

The best fast weight loss plan by which I mean one with proven results, that actively improves your health is one that can be adapted to your particular metabolic type. Some people lose weight very quickly on a low-fat diet. Others find this type of diet very slow. You must determine your metabolic type before choosing the fast weight loss plan that's right for you.
