We Review the Schwinn 430 Elliptical

With the winter holidays here at last and the upcoming New Year upon us, we decided that it was time to look at the top rated Elliptical trainer machines. After much research, we decided that the Schwinn 430 elliptical machine was right up our alley with its great price and feature set.

Features

The Schwinn 430 comes with an Eddy Current Brake (ECB) system which means you'll be in for a quiet, smooth ride. If you are a parent or have newborn children, the ECB system will definitely help when your children are asleep and you're trying to get a quick elliptical ride in. There is also a forward and reverse option which makes it easy to change directions if you want to change up your exercise routine. This is something you don't see with ellipticals at this price range.

The stride length on the 430 is 18 inches, which some may think is a little short. This all depends on how tall you are. For someone who is of average height, 18 inches is a pretty good length. Most ellipticals you find will run from 18-20 inches in most cases.

The BioGlide motion technology from Schwinn offers biomechanically designed linkages to provide a comfortable movement of the foot throughout the elliptical motion. We found this to make for a comfortable ride without any issues.

We found that the handlebar heart rate grips were adequate and worked much like any other heart rate grips on other ellipticals.

There are 8 computer controlled resistance levels as well as eight workout programs which are pretty customary for most elliptical machines. There is also an included water bottle holder

The Schwinn 430 weighs 152 pounds, with a maximum user weight of 275.

And lastly, the Schwinn 430 has transport wheels which makes it easy to move!

Dimensions (or, "Will this fit in my apartment??!")

The Schwinn 430 comes in at 59 inches long by 26 inches wide by 68 inches tall which we found would fit in our apartment.

Display

The Schwinn 430 has an LCD display which isn't backlit. Some people may have an issue with it not being backlit, however in our tests we didn't find this to be a major issue. Obviously you won't be able to ride this in the dark, or at least check your progress in the dark, and glare can be a concern if the LCD isn't backlit. So make note before purchasing if any of these will be an issue for you; it wasn't for us.

The display will also show the speed, time, distance, RPM, watts, pulse, calories, interval time, and resistance. These are all pretty standard features found on nearly all elliptical trainers.

Warranty

Elliptical Machines have different warranty periods for different parts of the machine.

Frame: 15 years

Parts: 2 Years

Electronics: 1 Year

Labor: 90 Days

Price

The Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer has a suggested retail price of $799.99. The best price we've found is from Amazon at $631.78 as of the time of this writing (11/29/2010).

Assembly/Customer Service

We had no issues putting together our Schwinn 430, however some customers have had issues with a missing M8x25 bolt. Another customer received two right legs. So in some cases there have been assembly issues and calls to customer service have solved these issues. If you have issues and Schwinn customer service can't help you, some customers have called Nautilus to resolve their problems.

Do We Recommend?

We make a strong recommendation on the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer. In our research, we've found that there are other ellipticals that may offer some additional features but overall at this price point the Schwinn 430 is a great elliptical machine and most users seem to agree.
