Types Of Incisions For Breast Augmentation

There are many reasons for a woman to have this type of surgery. Some simply want to enlarge their chest size, others are undergoing reconstruction after surgery for cancer, and others want to add size to one side to make them symmetrical. You and your surgeon will also need to discuss where the implants will be placed and what type of incision you will have for the surgery. There are four different types of incisions which regulate the placement of the silicone or saline-filled shell:
The inframammary technique is one of the most common techniques used for breast augmentation surgery. An incision is made below the breast. This way the scar if well hidden between the since it contours along the chest wall. Implants are typically placed in front of the pectoral muscles when the inframammary technique is used.
A second type of incision is the transaxillary technique. The implant is inserted through an incision below the arm. The scarring is barely visible unless the woman fully lifts her arms. Implants inserted through the underarm are typically placed behind the muscle. This makes the transaxillary technique an ideal method for thin women or for those who are undergoing reconstructive surgery since the muscle hides any ripples caused by saline implants.
This third method, called the transumbilical technique, is the most difficult option. However, it leaves no scars on the breast or upper body. Using this technique, the implant is inserted in front of the pectoral muscle through the belly button. The surgery often requires a camera scope in order to ensure proper placement of the implant. And the only placement option is in front of the muscle.
The final option is the periareolar technique. This technique requires the surgeon to make an incision around the areola. The scar is fairly well hidden between the skin color changes which occur at the beginning of the areola. The shells can be placed in either location - in front or behind the pectoral muscle. The periareolar technique is definitely not ideal if the woman would like to breastfeed a baby later since it causes considerable damage to the milk-producing glands and nerves.
As with any surgery, you'll need to plan on some recovery time and the possibility of bruising, swelling, infection and other complications. Your doctor will discuss proper care for the surgical site, normal soreness and also abnormal symptoms that you should watch out for in the weeks after surgery. He'll also discuss recovery time, and when you can get back into your regular routine at work, home and any extra activities you enjoy. It may take some time to get used to the beautiful results of your breast augmentation, but you're sure to love it!
