We all know how important is to be fast in the field. The faster you are, the stronger you become, and when you combine speed and strength you have power. The more powerful is the one who succeed, period.
But, how Elite level athletes achieve such lighting speed? Well, lets see. First you need to build a base: speed, strength, stamina and explosiveness.
Speed: Aim to do track sessions at least 3 times a week. Do short sprints about 50-100m.
Strength: Aim for 3 weightlifting sessions per week. And I mean HEAVY sessions using 3-5 rep ranges on all exercises.
Stamina: Maybe you have heard of doing endless hours of long runs to get that stamina to a great level, well, that's wrong. All you need is High Intensity Interval Training (Known as HIIT). Doing intervals at a changing pace is the best way to increase VO2 max, this is what the pro's are doing, screw that oldschool non-sense junk training.
Explosiveness: This is the most important aspect of any sport. Explosive power is a combination of speed and strength in unique, powerful movements. There is a variety of exercises to get explosive power: Olympic lifts, Plyometrics, and resistance running. All of them have their place.
As a coach, here is a list of some explosive exercises I have my athletes doing, try to do them 3x times a week:
Cleand & Press 5x3
Power Clean 5x3
Box jumps
Bounces
As you should know, this is the basic stuff. There is so much more into this that will get you to get that peak conditioning.
Also, have you seen how the faster, successful athletes have the more ripped bodies? Is it a result of this specific type of training or is it coincidence? I THINK NOT.
Improve those and get brutal results and gain the confidence you need to succeed in the field. If you are looking to improve that race time, strength for football, quickness for soccer, or explosiveness for combat sports or basketball you should check what the pro's are doing: lots of advice from pro coaches, specific exercises, drills, schedules, routines and supplements the pro's are doing I HIGHLY recommend you check this extended overview http://truthaboutquicknessscamornot.blogspot.com/
