The Place To Be In King's Cross - Hugo's - Review

Kings Cross is so well known for its seedy atmosphere and it's crazy antics that

it can be hard to create a classy atmosphere that fits in with the scene. Hugo's combines classy with Cross-ey for a night that is definitely an interesting experience. Be warned though: classy in the Cross doesn't come cheap, and sometimes it just ain't worth it.

Hugo's is made up of Hugo's Bar and Pizza downstairs, and Hugo's Lounge upstairs. As the name suggests, you can either get food or drink here so it satisfies anyone's needs for the night, and I have to say that the pizza part of Hugo's is my favourite: on Friday nights, you can get an entire pizza for $5 and it tastes ridiculously good. There is plenty of seating around the food areas (always handy because you can't eat a pizza standing up!), and the entire space doesn't feel cramped at all unlike other places in the Cross. The bar area upstairs at Hugo's Lounge is a different story though: there is hardly any space to sit and even though there is plenty of room it somehow still gets crowded fairly quickly. The decor makes up for this though: funky lights hang from the ceiling and the rocky walls give Hugo's a polished yet not-too-pretentious look.

As it's located in the heart of Kings Cross and right above The Club, Hugo's is a great place to hang out if you want a break from the crazy antics of Sydney's nightlife scene...but in terms of actually spending an entire night there, I have to say in all honesty I'm not a big fan. The people that turn up here are a little bit more on the tame side in my experience, and the drinks are far to expensive to make it worth coming for pre-drinks. While there is a dance floor, the floor doesn't really go off until midnight and by then you could be dancing away downstairs or at another club. The people that come here range a little bit: Friday nights see an older crowd in the evening and a younger crowd at night, while Saturday blends together all types of people for an interesting and diverse group of people to hang out with.

In terms of drinks, as I mentioned before...it is definitely not worth it to drink here. Sure, $9 for a vodka sunrise or $10 for a Crown isn't ridiculous, but Hugo's doesn't offer any beers on tap which was incredibly off-putting for me. The bartenders were not very helpful and gave off a pretentious vibe that definitely made me want to steer clear from purchasing more drinks. Cocktails here are delicious though, and their Long Island Iced Tea (a classic favourite of me and my friends) is definitely a winner.

The music is definitely enjoyable at Hugo's: the dance floor houses some incredibly catchy house and hip hop beats that ensure you will be dancing for quite a while. Be warned though that if you decide you want to dance before midnight, you can be prepared to find some very drunk - and sometimes very violent - patrons that are less than desirable.

All in all, Hugo's is enjoyable if you're drunk, not really into the all night wild clubbing scene, or looking for somewhere with nice decor. Because it can be such a hit and miss though, my advice is this: start out your night at The Club downstairs or at another club down the road, and rock up to Hugo's when you want to chill out. Alternatively, you can get a $5 pizza on Friday evening and start the weekend off with a sober - but equally as awesome - bang.
