The Big Secret to Weight Loss!
When it comes to losing weight, there is one obstacle that is a big cause of failure for so many people
. Believe or not that obstacle is actually getting started! Not knowing where to start can be such a problem, it can be enough to prevent you from getting anywhere, or you can set off on the wrong path and do more damage than good. It doesn't really matter how much weight you want to lose, it could be 10lbs or it could be 100lbs, there is something that everyone should do. This article is designed reveal teach you what that thing is, to help anyone who is struggling to get moving, to get them off on the right foot.
The very first thing that you need to do before anything thing, is to set yourself goals. This is so important, if you don't know what you are aiming for how will you get to where you want to be?! Think of your goals in the same way as sign posts and milestones on roads, they tell you which way to go and how far you are away from your destination. Setting yourself a series of long term and short term goals, will act as your road map to your final goal, with sign posts leading the way and showing you how you are progressing.
A good starting point with goal setting is to ask yourself two questions...
1. How much weight you want to lose?
2. When do you want to lose this weight by?
Once you have the answers to these questions, WRITE THEM DOWN! This is very important, if you keep the answers in your head they don't become real, as soon as you write them down they become official and you won't forget them! Right these goals down in several places so you constantly see them and keep them in your mind. A good technique is to write them on post it notes and stick them on mirrors, doors and other places you will see them. A really great place is the fridge door, just as a reminder when you reach for that chilled bar of chocolate! Another good place if you use one is on your treadmill or cross trainer!
We mentioned short term and long term goals, the answers to the two questions above would be your long term goals, say for example in 6 months time I want to have lost 30lbs. To help you even further you can split this up and add in short term goals, for example you could aim to lose 6lbs in the next four weeks. This will help you to break down your large goal, this will help you see how much more achievable they actually are.
Unfortunately just setting goals is just not enough, you need to make these goals achievable. If you set yourself an unrealistic goal, such as "I want to lose 60lbs in two weeks!", this just isn't achievable. Setting such unrealistic goals will nullify the very effects of goal setting just setting yourself up for failure. If you set yourself unrealistic goals and fail to achieve them, you will be disappointed and frustrated with yourself and your weight loss efforts, this will inevitably lead to failure.
It is important to understand what is achievable when it comes to losing weight. To lose weight in a healthy way, which will also give you results that will last long term, you should aim to lose one to two pounds per week. With this in mind look again at the amount of weight you want to lose in total, then work out how long it should realistically take you. Let's go back to our 60lbs example, a more realistic goal for this amount of weight is seven months, this is achievable.
Set yourself realistic achievable goals for yourself, this way when you achieve them, and this will help you will feel more confident and motivated to move forward. Although we want our goals to be realistic so we have a better chance of achieving them, it is important that if you don't quite achieve your goals that you don't get disheartened and give up, just re-adjust and get going again. This is on of the biggest secrets of successful weight loss!
