StarCraft 2 Preview - Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is set to be next the next hit in Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft series of military sci-fi strategy games. A sequel to the 1998 award-winner, StarCraft II is a real-time strategy game set in a remote part of the Milky Way galaxy during the 26th century just four years after the events occurring in the last expansion pack, StarCraft: Brood War.

Players can choose to play one of three species, namely the Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss in a competition for galactic dominance. The Terrans are a rag-tag group of humans exiled from Earth, while the Zerg are an insectoid species of sorts. The Protoss are a bizarre species with various paranormal powers.

Each of these species has their various strengths and weaknesses, all of which make for playable entertainment regardless of which species ends up being your dominant favourite.

StarCraft II is planned to be released in three instalments, with one base game, "Wings of Liberty", and two expansion packs, namely "Heart of the Swarm" and "Legacy of the Void". As one may guess, Wings of Liberty will be focused around Terran adventures, with long-time, award-winning Starcraft hero Jim Raynor leading the fray. Heart of the Swarm will focus on Zerg story-lines while Legacy of the Void will follow those of the Protoss.

Starcraft II is designed to focus more heavily on multi-player gaming than its predecessor. The single-player action, substantially modified from the original, is still expected to remain highly playable. In addition to new characters and locations, all of the old characters from the original Starcraft title will also be included. A new level editor, Galaxy Editor, is set to replace the original campaign editor, StarEdit. The addition of a marketplace for high-quality maps should generate increased interest in Galaxy Editor.

Starcraft II is currently planned for release on the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems in both standard and collector's editions. A few lucky gamers may even be able to play the game early through Blizzard's beta testing program. Navigate to http://us.starcraft2.com/beta-faq.xml for more details.

Although there is no fixed release date published so far, it is expected that Wings of Liberty will be available during the first half of 2010. Official commentary from Blizzard dictates the release date being dependent on the title satisfactorily fulfilling their quality-control standards. With only a couple short months left before the end of the first half of 2010, it is hoped these standards will be soon met.
