Saving You Money: Know The Bad Signs Of A Street Mechanic How Not To Get Ripped Off!

I am writing this article from experience and to warn others about street mechanics, times are hard and losing money is not an option if you are struggling to make ends meet.

I see this guy walk up and down my street almost everyday, he and my husband are football buddies. I got this van and it needed an electrical harness, first I thought I needed brakes because I had to push all the way down to the floor to make the car stop. But then, my husband and our neighbor mention this guy to me, they said that he is a certified mechanic. So I got my spouse to contact him and see if he could take a look at the car, he came and he said it wasn't the brakes it is my ABS system or something like that.

This automotive specialist said that I needed an electrical harness; he even showed me the wires that were burning underneath the hood my vehicle. He talked so professional using all of the automotive words, explaining how the wires work and how they should be bolted and hooked up. So I gave in and trusted him, he told me he needed a print out of the vehicle and he would need $10 so I gave it to him, then he said he needed more money for some relay switches, my guy knows a little something about cars so he told me what they were and he agreed with this guy.

I gave him the money, now while in the process of doing this and even though my hubby gave him good credit about his reputation I'm thinking to myself I'm just giving this guy cash free money he could take off with my dough at any time. Since he seemed to be ok, I pushed the doubt to the side and trusted him.

I Waited two days for the print out and relay switches, finally he came around after calling him about 5 or 6 times and brought over some car parts that goes to another brand of car. I'm thinking can he even use these parts, they don't even have the brand of my car on them, and they had another name on them? He said he could use them, talking his good game I gave him the money for the harness and what you know, this bastard ran off with my money, Oh no he didn't!

So long story short I got most of my money back, had to use a little muscle but I got it back. So this little experience lead me to write this article, here are some hazards signs and good tips to look out for when it comes to a street mechanic:

1. Never give anyone any money unless the job is done. Before giving him the money check the car out.

2. If your mechanic needs money for a part you go buy it or go with him.

3. Make sure you get his address and telephone number just in case you need to contact him, very important.

4. While he is fixing the car, stay there to make sure he does not do anything else to damage the car, if you cannot come send someone trustworthy.

5. If he's a drug user, than the best thing to do is to run! Crack heads will run off with your money in a heartbeat.

6. If something is wrong with your car allow him to explain thoroughly what's wrong with your car, ask the price of service before agreeing to let him fix it.

7. Look around; do price comparison, although street mechanics should be cheaper there are some that will charge an arm and a leg.

8. Never trust a mechanic that tells you they need money from you in order to get something, if you do make him sign a promissory note it's good to have some type of document just in case you have to take him to court.

9. If you have been ripped off go to the police, they will tell you that it is a civil matter but they can go and talk to the crook and that can scare him.

10. If your gut feeling is telling you no! Trust it; go to a professional car shop.

Well that's it I hope these tips can be of some benefit to you. I've learned my lesson and I will always trust myself before trusting anyone else.
