Safe driving means more money in your pocket!
For years now the government and automotive journalist have been telling us that careful driving can not only save lives but money too.
Recently two Seat Ibiza enthusiasts drove the Seat Ibiza Ecomotive from Lands End to John O'Groats on one tank of fuel. The Ibiza Ecomotive can do 76.3mpg thanks to its 1.4 litre TDI engine and a range of aerodynamic tweaks.
Going by the official figures one full tank of fuel should take the Ibiza 753 miles, the journey from Lands End to John O'Groats is 837 miles, with careful and intelligent driving the enthusiasts managed an average 87.3 mpg and even hit 93.5 mpg at times this meant they arrived at John O'Groats with 167 miles worth of fuel still left, an amazing achievement.
One of the enthusiasts, Mark Fitzgerald said "We thought we might have arrived in John O' Groats practically running on fumes but with careful driving you can save yourself money and protect the environment."
Once you have set off with the Seat Ibiza in Sittingbourne there are a few things you can do to increase your MPG and save some money:
Drive smoothly, accelerate gently and read the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking.
When you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear.
If you can keep the car moving all the time, so much the better. Stopping then starting again uses more fuel than keeping rolling.
Change gear as soon as possible without labouring the engine try changing up at an engine speed of around 2000 rpm in a diesel car or around 2500 rpm in a petrol car
Air conditioning increases fuel consumption at low speeds, but at higher speeds the effects is less noticeable. So if it's a hot day it's more economical to open the windows around town and save the air conditioning for high speed driving
Any electrical load increases fuel consumption, so turn off your heated rear windscreen, demister blowers and headlights, when you don't need them.
Drive at or within the speed limit the faster you go the greater the fuel consumption and the greater the pollution too.
If you do get caught in a queue avoid wasting fuel by turning the engine off if it looks like you could be waiting for more than three minutes.
