Shop drawings play crucial role in the success of any building construction or structural engineering work

. Architects and consultants always refer to well established drafting and drawing standards to prepare construction shop drawings. Once these specifications are applied to the construction documents, each member of the project be it contractor, fabricator or material supplier is enforced to adhere the specifications.

If shop drawings are not produced under stringent quality control, it may lead to imperfect or unsafe construction. Shop drawing submittal and review process holds the key to error-free construction and in avoiding costlier claims.

Some suggestions for quality shop drawing submittal and review process are listed below:

The contractor must prepare a comprehensive submittal schedule as per the contract documents to ensure the timely delivery and approval of shop drawings. This schedule needs to be accepted by the Architect and the owner as well.

Each shop drawing shall incorporate a list of the items from the Plans and Specifications such as material and equipments to be used, reference drawings and construction progress schedule. Any deviation from submittal specifications must be clearly mentioned in the quality control document with adequate explanation.

It is necessary for the contractor to sign and stamp all the shop drawings to ensure that the work is carried out in compliance with the project specifications and is reviewed for dimensions and connections with all other departments involved.

The Architect must also review and approve shop drawings before sending them back to the contractor. However it should not release the contractor from responsibility for errors or deviations from defined contract specifications.

Quality control procedures and techniques must be followed thoroughly, continuously and be consistently complied across all project members failing which only result in imperfect structures and litigation claims will only continue to grow in the future.
