Much of weight loss has to do with self discipline--finding a diet and exercise program that is right for the individual and sticking to it. One critical factor that experts say influences weight is portion sizes. Weight loss experts say that we can eat just about anything we wish as long as it is an appropriate portion size. Our stomachs are about as big as our two hands cupped together and if we stuff it with over sized portions, then it will stretch. We only need a portion about the size of the inside of one palm for pie, cake, or any serving to fill us up, say the weight loss experts.

Overeating also has much to do with the lifestyle that we develop over time. Sometimes we simply need to retrain ourselves by replacing old patterns with new ones. Katrina Purcell is in favor of longterm dieting as opposed to short term, but she thinks losing a substantial amount of weight at the beginning of a diet is good psychological motivation for the long term diet plan. We tend to repeat whatever gives us good results, but Purcell warns against crash dieting or a starvation type of dieting.

A good diet takes good planning with a responsible support system such as a dietician, physician's input, sensible nutrition and exercise. A person should not stop dieting when they lose the weight they wanted, but should continue on the path to healthy living. We can eat those foods we like, but we must do so in portions our bodies can handle and metabolize. Do not eat more than you need and know what those needs are.

Despite the positive results of Purcell's study, other experts say that more research is needed to determine whether those who have rapid weight loss regain the pounds as quickly as it was lost or if they keep it off permanently.

Losing too much weight all at once can be risky. Without the proper support system, people can gravely harm themselves with diet pills, starvation diets, and diets that do not provide enough nutrients or calories to keep them healthy. Over the counter diet products are not regulated by the Federal Drug Administration, which means there is insufficient evidence to back the claim of the product.

If people really want to lose weight fast, they should cut their calories and increase their exercise routine, but not to the point that they over exert without enough food to provide their bodies with sufficient nutrients. Someone who does not diet and exercise safely can develop serious symptoms and illnesses which can be dangerous, but so is obesity. However, one most likely will continue with a weight loss program if results can be immediately seen, so if one chooses a rapid weight loss program, it should be done with care.

The Netherlands Institute for Public Health did a study between the association of weight lost while on a weight loss program and the long term affects for the dieter. According to this study, 54 percent of those who lost weight, maintained the weight loss long term.
