Pembrokeshire Hotels, Stay In Beautiful, Historic West Wales

This article is a brief review of some of the historic landmarks and visitor attractions

which can be seen in the county of Pembrokeshire in West Wales. For those who choose to visit Pembrokeshire there are a number of quality Pembrokeshire hotels offering a friendly welcome to their guests. The Beggars Reach hotel, in Burton near Milford Haven, is situated in pleasant rural surroundings, and has thirty rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.

Pembrokeshire is in south west Wales, bordered by the Irish Sea on three sides. The county therefore has a long, and quite beautiful coastline, with many towering cliffs, and inlets and bays with sandy beaches. Much of the coast can be explored by walking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path (186 miles in total), and the wildlife and scenery are protected by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

In the north of the county one can find a high moorland terrain called the Preseli Hills. This area is noted for a large number of prehistoric remains. Many are found near Carn Menyn, which is now known to be the place from which the builders of Stonehenge obtained the massive bluestone rocks used in the inner circle.

Wales was part of Roman occupied Britain, and when the Romans left in 410 AD, Wales remained a stronghold of the Britons, and was not conquered by the Anglo-Saxons. At this time the country was fragmented into a series of petty kingdoms, not much bigger than present day counties. The territory which is now Pembrokeshire was at that time part of the Kingdom of Dyfed. The name Dyfed was "reused" from 1974 to 1996 as a county in the local government reorganizations. The county of Dyfed actually covered most of South West Wales, but now only exists for ceremonial purposes.

After the Norman invasion of England, they soon expanded into Wales as well. The Normans organized county divisions on the English model, and the Kingdom of Dyfed became the county of Pembrokeshire. The first Earl of Pembrokeshire was Gilbert de Clare.

During the Norman rule the county had the legal status known as county palatine. The lords who ruled these counties had a lot of power and privileges, and were able to operate autonomously from the King. The county palatine system, and the very similar Marcher lord system, were used by the Normans in the more troubled parts of their kingdom, that is in Wales, in Ireland, and on the Scottish borders.

The Normans enforced their control by building dozens of castles, remains of many are still standing in various states of repair. In Pembrokeshire itself there are ten or so castles, and probably the same number in each of the neighbouring counties. Pembroke Castle, Carew Castle and Haverfordwest Castle are three of the many in Pembrokeshire which can still be seen.

St. Davids in Pembrokeshire is the most westerly place in Wales. It is Britain's smallest city, the final resting place of Wales' patron saint (St. David), and is in effect the ecclesiastical capital of Wales. In addition to St. Davids' Cathedral visitor attractions here include the Tower Gate (13th Century) and the Celtic Old Cross. There are also a number of art galleries.

Milford Haven is located fairly centrally in Pembrokeshire, and would make a good base for a holiday exploring the county. Near Milford Haven, one can find the Beggars Reach hotel in Burton. This hotel is set in its own grounds, and many of the rooms have excellent views across the gardens, and across the Welsh countryside. All of the Beggars Reach's rooms are individually designed, with en-suite bathrooms.
