Difference Between Facial Injection Types

Botox is a botulinum toxin injection that has become immensely popular since its FDA approval and introduction to the skin care market in 2002

. Since then, over 11.8 million men and women have experienced noticeable age-defying results and anti-wrinkle treatment with the dermal injection. Many patients and their doctors utilize Botox because it provides dramatic results without surgery or post-operative recovery time.

Recently, the FDA approved another botulinum toxin injection to assist in the fight against aging and wrinkles. Dysport was originally developed as a treatment for movement disorders and muscle spasms. The drug's benefits as an anti-aging treatment were discovered in Europe several years ago and it has since become a primary competitor for the botulinum market. Developed by the same pharmaceutical company that provides other popular skin fillers such as Perlane and Restylane, Medicis brought the new botulinum toxin to the USA with the help of manufacturer Ipsen.

While both Botox and Dysport relax facial muscles and eliminate wrinkles with the same toxin mechanism, there are significant differences between the two. Cost and formula are subtle but important differences that may determine their use by individual doctors or patients. Dysport is currently being offered at a lower rate than Botox, which may be an attempt by the manufacturer to get a foothold in the anti-aging market and compete with an already well-known and trusted botulinum toxin.

The two formulas differ in that Dysport is reportedly delivered at lower concentrations than Botox. This has significant repercussions on variables such as how long the treatment will last and what sort of side effects may be expected. Many doctors feel the less concentrated formula won't last as long as its competitor. However, serious side effects may be minimized.

One of the most common side effects reported with a lower concentration formula is its tendency to spread into neighboring tissue and cause unwanted paralysis in other areas. This can be avoided by choosing a cautious professional with experience who is able to pay special attention to areas around the eyes and mouth. Other common side effects occur with both Botox and Dysport and include mild headache, redness or soreness at injection site, and light bruising. More severe side effects include rash, allergic reaction, or drooping of surrounding facial muscles.

In conclusion, most doctors would prefer to wait until Dysport has been more widely used before determining whether or not it is a superior anti-wrinkle regimen. Patients may be encouraged to try each treatment and see which they personally prefer.
