Parenting Together As A Step Family
No one ever told you that parenting together as a step family would ever be easy; however
, there are ways everyone's life a little easier. Now that you are married, you probably have a few children that have been brought into your blended family mix. Parenting is much easier if you and your new spouse work together as one united team. Although you have your biological children, there are no reasons for them to be treated any different than your step kids. The same will go for the other step parent. They should treat your kids just as their own.
Blended families are easier said than done
In most cases, it's natural to treat your biological children a little different than the step children. When you choose to become a blended family you can no longer favor your own children. ALL children must be treated the same way to create a fair home situation. There can be no favorites when it's time to discipline. It may be difficult to put those words into action, but it's more than imperative.
Plan out the step parenting path
When you become a step family, it's important to have a plan set in place. Just like couples who are having a brand new baby, it is important to be prepared for the parenting road ahead. Think of it as if you are bringing a new baby home. Everything is going to be different because you are putting together a new family - a blended family.
Take the time to talk about how your lives will change and what your plan of action is. It's necessary that you talk about discipline and how it will work in the newly blended family. Also, talk about boundaries for your home life and family. After you have sat down with each other, you will also want to talk to everyone in the family about it.
Treat each child in your blended or step family fairly and equally
As mentioned before, you want to set rules that everyone can follow and agree on. It's also important to follow through with those rules. You want everyone to be treated fairly and equally. With that said, you are the key to making sure everything is treated like so. Every household has their own rules, but whatever rules you establish must be followed through with.
Let the biological parent take the lead
Whenever a new family is blended, it can seem as though the step parent is picking on the other child, which is not the case. All kids should be treated fairly and equally. All children should respect both parents, but there are just some situations where the biological parent should do the disciplining. That does not mean the step parent should be taken for a ride either. Both parents should stand united in this step family and show the children that you mean business, no matter what.
