NFL - NFC West Division review

Let's go over the weakest division in the NFL: the NFC West, the only one leaded by teams with a .500 win percentage.

Embarrassing could easily describe the 2009 season for the St. Louis Rams, but we will rather stick with painful. They could have ended the year winless (1-15) if it wasn't for the 17-10 win at Detroit on Week 8. Running back Steve Jackson surpassed Eric Dickerson's four 1,000+ rushing yards seasons in 2009. He rushed for 1,416 that year and led the NFC in this category, becoming the fourth player Charles White, Lawrence Mc Cutcheon and Eric Dickerson - in franchise history to do so. And wide receiver Danny Amendola had 2,000+ combined yards, and now joins Dickerson, Jackson and Marshall Faulk as the only Rams that have do it.

The 2010 season is being so much better than the previous one for the Rams, that after being able to just win one game in 2009, have already won 4 times this year, and lead the NFC West standings with Seattle. The Rams last game finished with a 20-10 win over the Panthers, and it was one of the best games of the season so far for the rookie quarterback Sam Bradford, who threw 25 of 32 for 191 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. They will try to break the tie with Seattle for the first place against San Francisco on Week 11, when they should come back fresh from Bye Week.

The Seattle Seahawks had a really negative strike in the end of the 2009 season, losing 4 out of the last 5 games, to finish 5-11 in the year. But this wasn't an obstacle for quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to complete his sixth career 3,000+ yard season that entitle him as the highest in franchise history. John Carlson set a franchise tight end record with seven touchdowns. Also his 51 passes for 574 yards in the year were the second-most by a Seahawks tight end. And kicker Olindo Mare's 19 consecutive field goals set a franchise record.

The Seahawks seem to be dancing to a one step forward, one step backward melody, in a 2010 season where they have won the same number of games that they have lost: 4. Despite this, in a mediocre Division this has been fair enough to be tied in first place with the Rams. Seattle will be visiting Arizona in Week 10 with a two loss strike, something that they will try to end against their Division rival that comes in third. Mark Hasselbeck missed the 41-7 loss against the New York Giants due to a concussion, and should be back versus the Cardinals. He is almost half way through -1,411- what could become his seventh career 3,000+ yard season, we'll see if he can set a new franchise record.

Since the 1974-75 seasons the Arizona Cardinals didn't win back-to-back division titles, something that was accomplished in 2008-09. In 2009 they became the only team in the season that didn't lose back-to-back games, and with 10 wins they tied the 1976 franchise record. Quarterback Kurt Warner tied Neil Lomax's eight 100+ passer rating games franchise record from 1984, and wide receiver Anquan Boldin completed his fifth season with 1,000+ receiving yards, becoming the first Cardinals player to do so. And Larry Fitzgerald's 13 touchdowns set a career high, while his 97 receptions helped him to climb to the third-place in franchise history with 523.

Just like each one of the teams in their Division, the Cardinals have had the same irregular performance as the rest, and find themselves in the third place of the NFC West with a 3-5 record. They will be playing Division rivals Seahawks on Week 10, where they will attempt to end with the three loss strike that began after their Bye Week. The offense is struggling a lot to produce points in the 2010 season, problems that need to get a solution soon, before it is too late and they end up eliminated.

The 3-2 in the last 5 pretty much summarizes how irregular the 2009 season was for the San Francisco 49ers that ended up 8-8, despite being able to complete five games without allowing a touchdown, the highest in the year. The single-season 10 touchdowns franchise record was tied by running back Frank Gore, who also set a career-high with it. And he didn't just stop there, as he also tied Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Perry's 20 100-yard rushing games in franchise history. Tight end Vernon Davis also tied a record, but in NFL history with 13 touchdown receptions, the same as Antonio Gates in 2004.

Being the worst team in the weakest Division of the NFL must be really alarming for the 49ers that began the 2010 season with a 5 game losing strike. Week 9 was their Bye Week, and they reached it with a win their second of year- against Denver 24-16, which should help them to come in motivated from their rest and start changing things around in Week 10 versus St. Louis. Quarterback Alex Smith is not fully recovered from his left shoulder injury, the same one that kept him away from the victory versus Denver, and that could give Troy Smith one more Sunday as the starter quarterback. Troy's first game of the season brought a win for the 49ers, and winning two in a row could win him a place with the starters, despite Alex's recuperation.
