NFL- AFC South Division review
Indianapolis is the solo leader of the Division after Week 10, where Tennessee and Jacksonville have an interesting dispute for the second place, meanwhile Houston struggles to achieve their second winning season in a row.
Before 2009, no team in NFL history had obtained 7 consecutive 12-win seasons, record the Indianapolis Colts set that year. The Colts began the season with such intensity that by Week 11 they had already clinched Division which also gave them Homefield Advantage in the postseason- and joined the 49ers (1997), Eagles (2004) and Patriots (2007) as the only four teams that have done so since 1990. With a 14-2 the Colts went to the playoffs and defeated the Ravens 3-20 for the Divisional Round. Then they won their Super Bowl ticket against the Jets, defeating them by 17-30 in the AFC Championship Round. Their season had a surprising ending in Miami, where they were upset by the Saints 31-17, missing the chance of becoming the Super Bowl XLIV champions.
Once again in control of the AFC South, the Colts have already 6 wins in the 2010 season, where they have only lost to Texans, Jaguars and Eagles for a .667 win percentage. Quarterback Payton Manning is guiding the team throwing 248 of 386 for 2663 yards and 16 touchdowns. On this past weekend they defeated the Bengals 23-17, an important victory considering the absence of key players such as wide receivers Austin Collie and Blair White due to injuries. The Colts have a pretty hard road test against the Patriots on Week 11, where they could pay the toll for these absences.
After Week 6 nobody would have imagined that the Tennessee Titans would reach the .500 win percentage after beginning the 2009 season with a 6 lost strike, but they did. Those negative results found response in a 5 win strike, something never accomplished before in NFL history after a start like that. Running back Chris Johnson collaborated with the cause with 2,006 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, the highest in franchise history for a single-season. And teammate Bo Scaife finished with 215 career receptions, which place him as the second highest for a Titan tight end, but is still far from Frank Wycheck's 482.
The 2010 season didn't start as precariously as the previous one, and Tennessee has been able to win 5 out of 9 games after Week 10 -which includes their Bye-. Running back Chris Johnson is performing at a great level once again with 838 yards for 9 rushing touchdowns. The calf injury suffered by starter quarterback Kerry Collins in the 29-17 road lost versus Miami will give his teammate Vince Young another chance to see action from the beginning on Week 11 versus Washington. Tied with Tennessee in the dispute for the second place of the Division, product of the 5 wins and 4 loses each, the race after the first place that Indianapolis (6-3) holds will be exciting.
Jacksonville finished the 2009 season with a 4 lost strike to close another losing year. 7-9 was the balance of a season where running back Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for 1,391 yards, becoming the third highest in a single-season by a Jaguar, and was able to also set a team record with 15 rushing touchdowns, surpassing Fred Taylors 14 from 1998. In his rookie season wide receiver Mike Thomas' 48 receptions became the highest in the Jaguars' history for a rookie. In Week 10 Jacksonville had the highest per carry average in NFL since 1970 with 13.6 against Tennessee, when they rushed for 217 yards.
The Jaguars came back from their Bye with a 31-24 win versus the Texans on Week 10, and untied their 4-4 record with it. They will go after their third win in a row and sixth of the 2010 season- against the Browns on Week 11, with the doubts of quarterback David Garrard clavicle conditions- after taking a hit versus Houston- dissipated, as the X-rays showed that he is fine. His contribution this year has been of 1140 yards for 15 touchdowns, and many more can be expected from him in the last 7 games of the regular season.
With a 9-7 record the Houston Texans were able to close their first winning season in history, where they won 4 of their last 5 games. With 4,770 yards, 29 touchdowns and 98.6 passer rating quarterback Matt Schaub set the a franchise record, and his nine 300-passing yards games in one season made him the third best in NFL history, at just one game away from Rich Gannon and Drew Brees. Schaub had a great connection with wide receiver Andre Johnson, and together they led the NFL in passing yards -4,770 for the QB- and receiving yards -1,569 for the WR-. The last time that two teammates had done it was back in 1998, when Packers Brett Favre and Antonio Freeman did it too. And Linebacker Brian Cushing was named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, in a season where he had 4 interceptions, tying the record for a Texan linebacker.
The Texans haven't been able to enjoy a victory since their Bye, and Week 10 was as negative as the previous two, losing to Division rivals the Jaguars 31-24 at Jacksonville. After this 3 lost strike they occupy the last place of the AFC South with a 4-5 balance with 7 games to go until the end of the 2010 regular season. With 920 yards and 10 touchdowns running back Arian Foster is one of the high points of a team that has a though game next Sunday at New York, where the Jets, leaders of the AFC East, will be looking for their eighth win of the season.
