Money _Is this A fairy tale or today's reality

Money _Is this A fairy tale or today's reality

Once upon a very long time ago in a place far far away lived some people, among these people was a mighty hunter, a canny fisherman, a fantastic farmer, a brilliant seamstress and the local chief.

One day the hunter decided he needed a new blanket so he went to the seamstress and asked her if she could make him a blanket. She said yes but I need 8 skins, four for your blanket and the other four for the time it will take me to stitch your blanket together.

Off the hunter went and brought back 8 skins, the seamstress stitched together the skins and made two blankets, one she gave to the hunter who went off very happy, the other she took to the fisherman and said. "I have a brand new blanket here and I noticed that your present one is full of holes, if you would like this new one will you give me a pail of fish in return" The fisherman looked at his old blanket and agreed. So the seamstress gave him the blanket and got a pail of fish in return.

On her way home along the path maintained by the Local chief she met the farmer who saw the fish. " Oh boy" he said "How I would love some fish today" so the seamstress replied "Well if I can have some of your carrots then I will give you some fish" The deal concluded both went happily on their way.

The next week the farmer decided he needed a new blanket, so he went to the seamstress and asked if she could make him a blanket, she agreed but told him that she would need two buckets of potatoes, the farmer agreed, so she went to the hunter and asked for four skins in return for a bucket of potatoes. Unfortunately the hunter told her he did not like potatoes, but would love some fish, so she went to the fisherman and asked him id she could get some fish in return for a bucket of potatoes, the fisherman said no he did not like potatoes but would love some peas. Undeterred the seamstress went back to the farmer, who was talking to the chief, she told them her problem and the farmer agreed to give her some peas and potatoes in exchange for the blanket. The seamstress then went back to the fisherman and told him she would get some peas for him in exchange for some fish, them to the hunter with fish in exchange for the skins.

Eventually the farmer got his blanket.

The chief saw all this and when he went home started thinking, how can I make this easier for my people? Now the chief was an excellent stone carver, so he went out and got a large number of small stones which he carved into small circular ones with his face etched onto one side. He called all his people together and told them he had noticed how difficult it was for them all to trade with each other, so he had produced an exchange medium which he called grunts (nowadays known as money). He told them now you can use these grunts to swap for the things you need.

Everybody thought this was a great idea and soon the seamstress was paying the hunter one grunt per skin and selling her blankets for 6 grunts, demand for grunts soared and the chief was kept extra busy making grunts along side all his other tasks. He eventually noticed that everybody was using more and more grunts and were walking down his beautifully maintained paths more and more, causing him to have to work harder to keep them up to standard. Eventually he decided that he could no longer keep working on the paths himself, so he got another person to carry out that work, but he needed grunts to pay the worker. So he decided that everybody should help contribute to this, and pay out a small amount every time they earned some grunts ( The birth of income tax).

This worked well for some time, but eventually the chief found that he had to take on another worker and pay him. How was he to get the extra grunts he needed? What he then saw was the seamstress took skins from the hunter, turned them into blankets and by doing so added value to the skins.. Of course he said to himself, if they are adding value to things then they should help pay for the worker who is adding value to the community, (So VAT was born.)

As time went on and everybody got older he realised that people could not work for ever, so once again he got everybody together and asked them what would happen when they were too old to work, nobody had an answer. So he said, "well if every week you pay a small bit of a grunt into this huge ceramic pot, I will make sure that when you cannot work any longer you can get paid back out of my pot; we will call it a pot cake. Again the people thought it was a great idea and started paying into the pot. So pensions were hatched

Years went by the chief making sure that his people got everything they wanted. But people started living longer, children started taking over from their parents and demanded more from the chief, he had to increase contributions of grunts from them. Also his supply of stones diminished and he found himself producing grunts from inferior pebbles. As time went by his people noticed the reduction in quality and came to the conclusion that they were worth less and less.( Is this the start of inflation?)

This meant that they found that they had to work harder and longer to earn the grunts they needed, but worse of all, was the fact that the pension pot was still the same, its size meant that it could not give out what everybody had been told to expect when they started paying into it.

The seamstress's great grand daughter, who had continued her great grand mothers business, found that by working all day sowing blankets she could not earn enough to pay all her bills. She thought about it and decided to branch out and using her sewing skills started to make shoes. Demand for the shoes increased and soon she had to take on more people whom she taught to sew the shoes. But because her house was not big enough, she told them they would have to work from home part time. This allowed them to create an extra income for themselves, which they ran alongside their day time job. She also thought if those people could help her find extra people to sew the shoes, she could teach them to teach the new people. Business bloomed and soon the seamstress found she had two sources of income, one from the blankets and the second from the shoes. At last she found that not only was she creating enough grunts to pay all her bills with, she had plenty left over and used them to enjoy all the things she ever dreamed of doing.

Not surprisingly, others noticed her success and came to her and asked her how she had managed to get her income so much above all that of her friends. Her reply was simple.

"All I did was create a second income stream for myself, and you should think about doing the same."

Now is this story something from a long time ago, or does it apply to most people today?

Is it a fairy tale or does the ending sound like something that is happening right now.

Are you happy with your income?

Can you support your family?

Is your pension secure?

Or would you like to create a second income stream which could be created and run alongside whatever it is you do at present?

Only you can answer these questions but if the answer to the first 3 is NO and the 4th is YES then maybeI can help.
