Medifast And Oprah
A few weeks ago, one of my coworkers said "Gosh, I guess medifast isn't working so well for Oprah anymore, huh? She's really gaining back the weight." (She's referring to the talk show host's recent thyroid issues in which she put on a bit of weight.) I had to explain that although I don't have any insight into Oprah's weight loss or diet (although she's always maintained that she currently eats sensibly and exercises), Oprah was never on the medifast diet. I'll explain the real story in this article.
Oprah's Liquid Only Diet (It Wasn't Medifast): In 1988,Ms. Winfreywent on a severe fasting diet in which she consumed mostly liquids (mostly in the form of shakes.) She has very dramatic short term results. She lost almost 70 pounds and emerged on her show triumphant wearing size 10 Calvin Klein jeans and lugging about seventy pounds of fat behind her. There's no denying she looked fantastic, but she gained the weight back just as dramatically. She has said publicly many times that the diet was a mistake that she regrets.
Now, I can sort of see why people would mistake Ms. Winfrey's for medifast. The company is kind of famous and well known for it's shakes. I can tell you from experience that they are tasty and filling. But, I also have to tell you that this is not a liquid only diet. I understand that there are folks out there who limit themselves to just the shakes withmaybe some of the soups (liquid only), thinking that severely limiting their calories is going to get them quicker or more dramatic results.
But, here's what I think those folks don't understand. All of the foods on this diet are designed to work as well as the shakes. All of them are low in calories, low in carbs andhigh in protein. Also, this diet requires you to eat often (six times to be exact) because this keeps your metabolism strong. And, since you are consuming a high amount of protein and a low amount of carbohydrates, your body is literally burning it's own fat.
So, if you went on this diet as designed, you'd eat five small meals per day and one larger, healthy meal you made on your own. You chose from over 70 food options (eggs, oatmeal, chili, stew, pudding, bars, shakes, cappuccino, etc.) You can chose these in any combination that you wish (but you're only supposed to have two of the bars per day). Theoretically, you could consume only shakes, but why would you want to?
As designed, medifast is around 1,000 calories per day. This and the mechanism of consuming high amounts of protein pretty much ensures that (if you don't cheat) you're going to be burning many more calories than you aretaking in. So, youreally can't help but loose weight. So, there is really no need to partake in high restrictive diets whenyou can eatreal food and still havevery dramatic results. I am living proof of this.
