Make Money – Save Money – Reduce Expenses – Live Better, Part II

In the first post of this 3 part series on making money

, saving money, reducing expenses, and living better we discussed how you might increase your income at your regular job. Now we will discuss opportunities on how to increase your income outside of work.

How to Increase Your Income Outside of Work

What hobbies or activities are you engaged in that can be turned into part time income?

For example do you enjoy flea markets? Buy at them and sell at them. Why not sell things that you have purchased at other flea markets and have no real use for? Start with cleaning out your storage area, basement, or garage and sell the stuff! Did you know that since eBay's founding in 1995 it has become the world's largest place to buy and sell, a community of hundreds of millions of regular people, small businesses, and even big businesses from all of the seven continents. Millions of items of every kind imaginable, in every condition imaginable, change hands every day on eBay for prices ranging from one cent to hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars (or pounds, or other forms of currency).

Are you an animal lover who can't walk past a dog or cat without making sure that animal gets some attention from you? Consider some of the many pet industry jobs such as grooming, walking, training, or pet sitting. I recently read an article that stated that the 2008 economics for pet-related small businesses will be affected by a continuing increase in pet-related spending, higher awareness of pet health, greater uptake of pet insurance, and continued humanization of pets, integrating them into all aspects of our lives. More than $2.9 billion dollars will be spent on pet services in 2007! It is a huge growth industry and one that will never go away as long as there are humans and pets on the earth.

Are you very creative with color and space and love to design and decorate? Staging homes for real estate agencies is another explosive growth industry, particularly these days when the housing market is experiencing such trouble.

Invest early and often in sound investments. Get sound money advice from a trusted financial planner or self educate. I suggest the following websites as a start: http://www.smartmoney.com/ orhttp://www.cnnmoney.com/orhttp://www.yahoofinance.com/.

If you work for a company that has company savings plans and 401k's use them. You may hear some "money gurus" who are saying don't do it but unless you have your own business or a dramatically better idea then sock away money in these tax deferred devices.

A very popular "guru" who had been trumpeting his real estate and financial literacy courses kept telling his audiences to not invest in the financial markets but only in real estate (and other things he was promoting). Do you really think buying real estate in 2008 is a no risk investment? Of course not! Self educate and be very careful of people who are giving such advice.

Are you a service professional such as an accountant or lawyer? Strive to pick up extra clients by offering to work nights or weekend. People will appreciate your willingness to help them and will become raving fans. What does this mean to you? Great word of mouth referrals!

This is not one that most people think of, but you would be surprised how many people walk off and leave old bank accounts or utility deposits behind. Go tohttp://www.missingmoney.com/ to find money you many be owed that you have overlooked or forgotten about.

Check your withholding and get it right. Most Americans get a tax refund of approximately $2000.00

Bottom line is, we all need our income to increase and expenses to decrease. Be wise with your money and don't over-extend yourself.

Stay tuned for Part3 covering how to reduce expenses and live better as a result.
