Why Can't I Lose Weight? This is a question I hear all the time in my family practice exam room. I hear theories espoused from a patients reading on Web MD or a general Google search.People feel there is some secret out there that no one is telling them about. If you need proof just check out the diet-weight loss industry, it is over 40 billon dollars a year. I think it's a glandular problem, can you check my thyroid, please. Lastly "could you just give me some diet pills, I just need a jump start and I'll be ok", is often the plead I hear.

Sound familiar to you? If it does please keep reading because I need to dispel some myths. Firstly, I do believe in a genetic predisposition to obesity. I am living proof of that. Do you feel like you can just look at that chocolate cake and you put on 10lbs? Then you have a genetic profile that skews you to obesity. However it does not mean you have to be obese!

Next is the skinny person that can eat anything they want, my wife, and not gain a pound. They eat candy, fried and fat foods and do they gain weight; heck no. the difference is two fold; the major factor is metabolism.Your metabolism is much like the thermostat in your home. If you have a high metabolism you tend to be slender, a slow metabolism and weight is a major issue. Have you noticed the fast metabolism skinny person never sits still? They are always running around doing something. When they sit down to watch a TV program they tend to doze off to a nap. There is no easy way to measure your metabolism.

The next factor is activity and exercise. This is how many calories you burn as you go through your daily activity. You could wear a pedometer around a get a good feel for this calorie expenditure. The good news is you don't have to because all of that is irrelavent.

If you have had your laboratory tests done and there is no deficiency stopping you from losing weight then pay close attention. There is 3500 calories in a pound of fat. So, if you want to lose a pound a week, you have to not eat or burn 500 calories a day. You will have to buy a calorie book or Google everything you eat to see where you can cut those calories. Exercise is fine but you would have to walk 5-10 miles, depending on your pace to burn those 500 calories.
