When the full game is released you will be given the usual single player campaign which really hasn't been talked about yet but once completed the focus turns to the multiplayer. This is the component which locks in players for hours and hours and from already playing it I can tell many will enjoy it greatly. Currently the closed beta is available to a selected few and those from the playstation plus theme download.

Upon starting the game you immediately see the new lobby system. It's very different to the previous game but similar to the other big games on the market. There are no real issues here and we are happy to see the changes. You can first choose to do a bot match or jump in against other players. We decided to go straight into playing online but for new players to the series they can get to grips with the game playing against bots.

In the beta there are 3 different game modes to choose from. The first game we played was Guerrilla Warfare a normal team deathmatch with a fancy name. It is also known as body count but again plays just like a team deathmatch. The team to reach the kill limit wins the game or after the allocated time the team with the most kills wins the game. This game mode is great fun and is made to just kill others. No objectives just straight up killing.

The next returning game mode we played was Warzone. Already one of the best game types in any game, Killzone 3 makes near to no changes to this game type and none are needed. Over the course of 7 rounds two teams battle it out to win one game type by one. The team to win the most game types out of the 7 in the end win the game. A very refreshing game mode which we are more than happy to see return. Game types in this mode include favourites like search and destroy assassination, capture the flag or territory and body count. All these combined into one playlist keeps things changing and interesting whilst keeping the core mechanics intact. Defiantly a great addition to Killzone 3.

The last of the game types available in the beta is a new one called Operations. It opens with a nice cutscene of your player and 3 others storming into battle and against the opposition. A 4v4 game type where one team defends and the other attacks. The offense is set objectives to complete whilst the defenders have to stop them. As an objectives is completed a new one is set and the map opens up a little more. Once all objectives are completed a cut scenes plays with you as the victor. But if you do not manage to complete the objectives in the given time you lose and a cut scene shows you being captured. This new game type is great and for those looking for a more tactical and team based game type. In the beta this game mode is only playable on the Frozen Dam map but hopefully in the retail copy it will be playable on all or more maps with different scenarios and objectives. For now are pleased to see this introduced into the game and cannot wait to see how it is expanded upon in the full game.

The experience system has taken an overhaul for the good. We are extremely happy with how the system works now and much prefer it to the previous game. Instead of unlocking guns as you progress with experience, you get experience depending on how well you play in the game. The experience goes towards ranking up your level. Once you reach a new level you are rewarded with an Unlock Point. This point can then be used to purchase a weapon or class upgrade. The best thing about this change is how balanced the game is now ensuring that there is no advantage to old players over new players. However some guns cannot be purchased until you reach a specific level making levelling up as important as gaining experience.
