Is There A Hotline Between You And Your Child by:Sudha Gupta

Open communication is must for a healthy relationship

Communication is the panacea of all problems. Without open communication with your child, you cannot understand him, know about what he is going through and with that, you can never help him. To improve communication with your child, follow these golden rules.

Listen to your child: Communication with your child will open up only if you are a good listener. Parents tend to make the mistake of preaching and doing most of the talking. But it's more important to listen to what your child has to say. Listen with interest, attention and patience. Don't cut down the conversation; let him complete what he has to say.

Be empathetic: Show your child that you understand his point of view, respect his feelings, can feel his pain or joy. Reflect his feelings by saying ' It seems that less marks have really upset you' or ' You are feeling bad for your friend, aren't you?' This kind of understanding will motivate your child to express his feelings in front of you and you'll know what exactly is your child's state of mind.

Share your feelings: Your child will learn to express when he sees his parents share their thoughts with him. Tell him about your day, how you feel about the new project, your misunderstandings with colleagues and so on. The trust you vest in your child will help to build your child's trust for you. Your openness will set an example for him to communicate his thoughts as well.

Master the art of conversation: While trying to strike a conversation, don't ask dead end questions that need answers in yes or no. Carry forward the conversation by sharing what you think about the topic in discussion. Ask him questions that instigate him to elaborate on his thoughts. But don't pester him to talk when he is not in a mood.

Base your relationship on love and trust: Your relationship with him should be such that he can talk to you about anything he wants to, without fear. Never pass a judgment on your child but assure him that no matter what ,you'll always be there. When he'll develop confidence in you, he'll want to seek solace in your arms. He'll discuss his problems and share his joys with you.

Parenting Tip : For a healthy relationship between you and your child, establish a hotline between you two. A hotline your child can dial anytime he wants to and talk anything he feels like!
