Involve Children In Household Chores. by:Sudha Gupta

Contribution by children in household chores is not a burden on them

, but an investment for their future.

Parents believe that children are meant to enjoy, and engaging them in routine household chores is boring. They let them leave their toys, books, clothes where they are and not take any responsibility towards the house. This approach makes children not only dependent but also disorganized in life.

Let children choose what they want to do : Give flexibility to children to decide what, when and how they'll like to contribute in household chores. Laying down the table, fetching groceries, or helping in the kitchen-let them do what they prefer to do.

Have fun doing chores with your child : Get involved with your child and don't just give instructions. Make him enjoy while working as if it's a game eg.- segregating fruits and vegetables while stacking food in the fridge. This way work will not be a burden but a pleasure for the child.

Appreciate your child's efforts : Express yourself when you see your child helping you by saying 'Thank you' or 'You are such a lovely child'. Reward them with outings or gifts they have longed for. No matter how small the contribution, encourage them with praise.

Doing one's own work makes a child independent : Making one's own bed, cleaning and organizing the book shelf etc. would make your child self reliant and develop an attitude to do things on his own in life.

Makes the child respect and realise the importance of hard work : Getting involved in household chores gives a very important message to the child that no work is below one's dignity. He will never grow up to feel that household work is meant to be done by servants or mother only. Thus, making him a much more confident, independent and a better human being.
