Is Nutrisystem Considered To Be A Good Diet?
I get a lot of emails asking "how good Nutrisystem really is." People often mean "good" in terms of effectiveness, taste of the food, ease of use, convenience, and cost. I'll take all of these variables into account when I review nutrisystem in the following article.
A Quick Description Of How Nutrisystem Works: Basically, this is your typical low calorie / low carb / high protein diet. You are asked to eat six times per day. They provide you with most of the foods. The foods are prepackaged, mostly ready to eat. Some require just a little assembly and some do not. This diet is really known for allowing a lot of variety and comfort foods. It is true that you really do get to eat pizza, ravioli, tacos, strawberry shortcake, etc. Of course, these foods have been altered to be "safe" and healthful. They also want you to add a fresh, low glycemic sides to all of the meals.
The fact that you're taking in less calories is going to contribute to your losing weight. But, the fact that you're taking in high amounts of protein makes the real difference because it puts your body in metabolic fat burning mode (ketosis.) This is supposed to provide quick and dramatic results, and for most people this is true. If results are less than fantastic, it's usually easily fixed. Often what trips people up is that some will skip meals (a major no no because you aren't giving your body what it needs to keep burning fat) or they'll eat high carb sides.
The Taste Of The Nutrisystem Food And The Portion Sizes: Over all, I find the taste of the food to be pretty OK. Of course, there are some things I don't like (most of the stew type lunches) but some things are quite good (the pizza, the lasagna, the tortellini, most all of the desserts, the cereals, and the snacks.) I love the candy type bars on this diet and would eat them in regular life. As for the portion sizes, they do take some getting used to. They are probably smaller than what you are eating now. But, over time, you do get quite used to this, especially once you start to see results and learn that it's very much worth it.
Nutrisystem Effectiveness And Nutrition: From what I can tell and from my experience, I find that most people are pretty happy with the results. In general ketosis only takes less than a week to reach. Once you hit this promised land, things should move quickly from there. And you can check to see if you are there with ketone strips. If you're not, take a look at what you're adding for sides. Most people will tell you that typical loss is around 2 1/2 pounds per week and this isn't too shabby. But, I find this estimate to be a touch low. Most people that I dialog with do a little better than this unless they are really cheating regularly.
All of the foods are fortified with vitamins and minerals and the fresh side requirement ensures that you are also getting nourishment from fresh foods. At 1200 plus calories per day, you aren't going so low that you need to worry. This is a low calorie diet, but it's no so restrictive that it requires doctor supervision or cause for concern.
Nutrisystem Cost: Generally, the base price of a month's worth of food is around $300. This is before you take advantage of coupons and discounts that can save quite a bit. Less than $10 for five meals is certainly very reasonable and comes in at around $2 per meal before specials. There is also a "flex" program that lets you take two days off per week. This plan requires less meals from the company so it runs $100 cheaper.
Other Options: As I said before, Nutrisystem Flex does sort of offer you a way to ease into the diet for less. You'll have to be careful with your two days off to make sure that you remain in ketosis but I know people who have had very good results on the flex program. Plus, it's cheaper and less restrictive.
