Is A Used Lexus Still Worth The Money?

What a traumatic year it has been for Japanese car manufacturers

. Thanks to the scandal of Toyota's sticking pedal, they've all taken a hit on their reputations. The questions everyone wanted to know was how would the news affect the performance of not just the main company, but also its Lexus line. In particular, what has been the impact on the price of a used Lexus?

Fist of all let's look at the crisis to try and understand why it is so devastating to Japanese cars. They have built their reputation on reliability and excellence. In the US they have a saying: 'if you want to be patriotic, buy American, if you want to get where you're going, buy Japanese.' However, does that now hold true?

The scandal has also affected the market for a used Lexus. This is the brands luxury car division, designed to compete directly with the likes of BMW and Audi. However, it has not managed to escape this particular storm unscathed. The recall did affect some models from its line, so has the brand name itself taken a serious hit.

The indications, so far seem unclear. Sales for Toyota remain strong despite the difficulty of the past year. This is in part fuelled by the enduring popularity of the Prius hybrid cars. Celebrities seem obsessed with the make and that puts it onto another level altogether.

It seems the long standing performance of reliability has left the Japanese make in reasonably strong shape. Prices above the board remain strong and we haven't seen dealers having to throw out the kind of bargains we might have thought.

So the outlook for anyone looking for a bargain basement used Lexus is pretty bleak. However, they might take heart by the recent fall in the second hand car market. Sales have fallen off significantly in the last year, due in part to the recession and the government scheme that saw more people opt for new models. As a result prices might be below where they used to be. It is well worth getting into the market now to find yourself a bargain before everyone else tries the same thing.

As such there may never be a better time to buy a used Lexus. The combination of the current state of the second hand car market as well as the recent scandals mean prices may be below par.
