Salt can add flavors and enhance flavors in your foods. It can also be used to preserve food. We also eat entirely too much salt in general, and there may be health implications. Salt for example increases blood pressure which can have severe implications. Everyone should try to limit their intake to a reasonable level regardless of their current health. Here are a few painless ideas to do it.
Since salt adds flavor, try adding flavor in different ways, for example by using spices and herbs. We all have our favorites, and I like rosemary, oregano, sage, white pepper, garlic, and plenty of onion among others!
Beware of hidden salt in packaged food. For example some canned veggies are full of it, and fresh ones are better anyways. Many condiments like ketchup, mustard, salad dressings, etc. are full of it. Luncheon meats and sausages are usually terrible! Become a label reader, and do note that some packaged foods may have low sodium or low salt versions available as well.
Never add salt without tasting food first. It may simply not need any at all. Mindlessly adding it can really up your intake level without adding any positive benefit at all. You might even consider leaving the shaker off the table at mealtimes. If it takes an effort to get, you'll use less of it!
