Dietary Strategies to Help Avoid Migraines

A migraine headache can be hard to explain to someone who has never had one. Yes, it's a headache but it can be debilitating and include nausea, vomiting, and intense pain. It is not an ordinary headache at all! The ability of migraines to develop quickly and without warning, and leave the sufferer basically debilitated not only is painful and awkward, but can cause severe work productivity issues that are often not well understood by bosses and managers. There are some dietary strategies that help many people avoid them and also limit their intensity when they occur. Perhaps some of these will work for you? Everyone is different and you may need to experiment, but since you may greatly improve the quality of your life it is well worth it!

First of all there are some foods to avoid. These include anything with nitrates as they dilate blood vessels and may spark a migraine. Nitrates are commonly found in processed, smoked, and lunch meats like bologna, salami, and others. If unsure, check the labels. Also cheese, wine, and beer can trigger attacks. I love sausage, cheese, and beer so this is tough for me but I've learned that the cheese and beer in moderation have little effect on me but sausages certainly can.

Here are some foods and herbs that can help. The herb feverfew, 50-125 mg daily, is recommended by many. I may help blood vessels from restricting by inhibiting blood platelets from clumping together. Feverfew is widely available and easily obtainable almost anywhere. Worst case, you can order online. Omega-3 fatty acids as found in fatty fish, foods fortified with it, and flaxseed oil can help. I try to have one or more serving of salmon weekly, which is no hardship as I love it, to get my omega-3 fatty acids.

Multivitamins are good, even if you do are not a sufferer. There are plenty of good multivitamins available. Calcium carbonate or citrate supplements are often recommended as well.

Try to eat small meals often, or at least snacks. You want the blood sugar levels to be stable, and eating every two hours helps this a lot. Eating plenty of soluble fibers also helps stabilize blood sugar levels.

Your migraines may ever be total gone, but some if the suggestions above may make them occur far less often, and be far less severe! Try these strategies and foods and see what works for you.
