How Diet Can Rescue Your Dna From Mutations
The core element of almost every cell in our body is a double helix of DNA
. It regulates how the cell, tissues, organs and eventually the whole body functions. Before a cell is divided, the DNA replicates itself, so that every daughter cell has its own copy. During the replication process itself, there can be made mistakes leading to changes in the sequence of the DNA. This is called mutation. Many factors can cause mutations to the DNA molecule, such as toxins, cellular poisons, radiation etc. As mutations accumulate, the more possible it becomes for a cell to become severely modified or even cancerous.
There are powerful mechanisms in the cells, able to handle mutations in a very efficient way. They possess powerful repair mechanisms which consist of specialized enzymes that can track down, recognize and fix the damages very quickly. The body is fully capable to heal itself. As long as these systems are fully functional, we are safe. Most problems arise when the following two conditions are present: first, overdose of toxins and mutagenic agents in our environment and diet and second insufficient nutrients intake to make the necessary amounts of DNA repair enzymes.
Therefore, we have two problems with two solutions. First, it is imperative to eat organic food, free from chemicals, toxins and pesticides. Although it sounds way too basic, it can make an impressive difference to the chemical load our bodies have to handle. Second, include nutrient and vitamin rich foods that will provide you with the raw materials for fully functional enzymes. The most important molecules for the repair mechanisms are the B vitamins and especially B12,B6,B3 and folic acid. This set of vitamins is of utmost importance for the enzymes responsible for the repair of mutations. Another important nutritional addition would be the introduction of antioxidants, substances that can neutralize free radicals, which are very dangerous little molecules causing instant damage to DNA. The more antioxidants we incorporate in your diet the best your chances are that you avoid DNA mutations in the first place. Your best antioxidant shots are glutathione (made of proteins, so eat plenty), Vitamins A, E, C, Carotenoids and Flavonoids. Most of these can be found in organic meat, fish, dairy and raw fruits and vegetables. It is of massive importance to prefer a nutrients dense diet if we want to have adequate defences against molecular and cellular threats.
