Going Places And The Lack Of Money

Actually, a lot of people look forward to traveling a lot before they retire but

a survey of typical retirees found that life is hardly one trip after another in retirement. Interviewing 700 people from San Antonio, Texas who belonged to the retired population for that city was a female doctor from the University of California at Berkeley. About a half of the group took a trip as often as once a year, 40 percent had not been out of town for more than three years, and some never traveled.

Less than six per cent of the retirees usually journeyed outside the city at least once a month. What happens here is that 10 percent of the out of town travel by retirees was to visit their children and 20 percent was to visit other relatives.

It is the lack of money which hindered many retirees from traveling. Actually, the 10 percent of the San Antonio retirees with annual incomes of above $5,000 are able to travel frequently. Traveling less than those from the same income level are the Black or Mexican American retirees.

Able to take more trips are the younger retirees and those who considered themselves to be in good health. Traveling by car is a third of those who traveled as often as once a year and they were either drivers or passengers. In this case, 20 percent flew and 15 percent went by train while another third rode the bus.

The people who were not delighted with the transportation are those who took the bus. Here, the travelers aired out specific disadvantages including the difficulties of getting a bus to the place one wanted to go as well as the inconvenient time at which the bus left or arrived. There were two thirds of the retirees who have never flown and half who have never been able to ride a train and she spoke to them.

Most of those who had flown liked the experience but they used the airlines mainly to visit relatives. What the retirees favored was land transportation because they could see the sights.

In this case, a fifth of the plane trips led to vacations. The major complaints about train travel were the inconvenient schedules, poor connections and inadequate passenger service, both at the station and in transit.

Trips will be done via train more frequently if the passenger services, schedules, and equipment were somewhat improved according to half of these people. When it comes to retirement travel, trains have their fair share of advantages because they are relaxing, carefree, enjoyable, comfortable, leisurely, convenient, safe, and sociable, and when there was no pressure on time and the purpose of the trip was enjoyment trains were also an excellent way to go traveling, see the sights, and meet interesting people.

Nearly all the San Antonio retirees who were interviewed wished to travel more, but some said that public transportation was too wearying. Something that they did not like was sitting for long periods of time in one position, as is necessary to some extent on both the plane and the bus, and to be rushed or crowded and jostled. They would like to have the freedom to get up and move about which is afforded by the train.

As well as relaxing, train travel is considered by many to be carefree for you can the companionship of other people while doing some sightseeing. What was mentioned by half of those she interviewed was that they would probably go places by train if the service was improved, but the California researcher doubts that this will happen.

When it comes to retirement travel, many consider the bus and the airplane to be the only options. What she gives the transportation industry is a warning.

Retirees will not necessarily flock to the ticket counters. Unless there is special attention to their needs, both as older persons and as leisure oriented travelers, she asserted, many may decide that the disadvantages of the trip outweigh the pleasures of traveling and decide to stay home.
