Disability Tax Benefits for Prader-Willi Syndrome Patients

Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. This happens because of the deletion or lack of expression of several of the parent genes in the child. During infancy, complexities like hypotonia or muscle tone weakness, difficulties in feeding, stunted growth and development are seen. The causes of this disability are genetic in nature. It is caused by the deletion of imprinted genes SNRPN and necdin, which are present in the parental genes. Some snoRNAs, SNORD64 and other clusters of genes may also be missing. This genetic deletion may occur due to reasons like chance and sporadic mutations, uniparental disomy and chromosomal translocations. The genetic mechanism that caused the disorder decides the risk of the sibling of the child with the disability to have this disorder as well. The chances can vary from less than 1% to over 50%, depending on the genetic mechanism. However, prenatal testing can identify the genetic disorder.

There are several symptoms of Prader-Willi Syndrome. These include having almond shaped eyes, underdeveloped motor functions, floppy newborn, an insatiable hunger, irregularity in skin like smooth philtrum, elongation of the face and prominence of the nose, hypogonadism, lethargy, excessive sleeping etc. Different symptoms occur at different stages of life. Delay in development of speech and social interaction skills is also common. Learning disabilities and impairment of intellectual development are also seen because of this disability. Behavioral abnormalities like excessive irritability, impatience and anger are common.

Several complexities can arise from this disability, but none of them really life threatening. Most of them occur during adolescence, teenage and adulthood. Stunted growth like short limbs, fair skin and light colored hair, delayed puberty and even underdevelopment of sexual features like lack of body hair or stunted genital growth is seen. This can lead to infertility in later life. The craving for food associated with this disability can cause diabetes mellitus and obesity, thereby causing some related health problems.

Anyone having this disability may be entitled to some disability tax benefits and credits. The Canadian Disability Corporation can help any such patients to know which of these disability benefits they are eligible for. They will also constantly give guidance and support while applying for these disability tax benefits.
