How Important is Money:
What is Its Value
September 18, 2002
Dear Mom:
"What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?" Quoting Jesus is how Saint Mark started last night's campfire discussion. Usually Saint Mark is too heady for me. Last night though he held my attention.
It reminded me of the times, and God knows there were many, that you and dad struggled for money. Not so you could afford to go on a cruise or go to some exotic hide a way, but so you could afford food for the family and proper medical care.
Mom I know I never told you thank you for all the sacrifices dad and you made for us kids. The great thing is that if you had to do it all over again you would have worked twice as hard to give us what you did.
Last night conversation was particularly interesting to me because I found out that whenever dad prayed that one of his business ventures would become enormously successful he always added," but if the success of this company means that even one of our children could lose their salvation due to the money, than please do not allow it to succeed". I know now that he was putting into practice what Jesus taught so many years ago. To some, a prayer like this would be like shooting yourself in the foot.
Yet, I see now why he prayed that way. Money is another tricky thing that humans invented. As I said in another letter, Jesus would rather we all just shared what He gave to us for free. Since this is not the case, money often becomes a terrific conflict in people's lives.
I realize that the way people have set up the world you need to earn money to survive. The question becomes, how much? To Jesus, the answer is enough to buy food and clothing. Unfortunately, to most people on earth the answer is however much I can get my hands on.
You must know that there is nothing wrong with money itself. It's how people handle it that creates such havoc. I now realize that it's part of our sin nature. It is so easy for non-Christians and Christians alike to get caught up in getting as many earthly things as we can get our hands on. In this frame of mind we convince ourselves that we "need" these things.
For instance there is the man who "needs" a cabin in the mountains to settle his nerves. If he knew Jesus, he would not "need" anything else to calm himself down. Than there is the women who "needs" another pair of black shoes because the three pair she already owns are not quite right to go with the new pair of pants she just had to have.Neither of these examples is inherently wrong to want or to have. It is a matter of priority. For instance, has this man taken care of his church's needs? Does this women only think of her own "needs" or has she recently bought clothing for the orphanage? You see mom, it is where the heart is when we are doing things that God looks at more so than what we are doing.
Well I have to run. I have another rehearsal with Peter and Paul.
Love Always
