Choosing a Wedding Guest Outfit

Choosing a Wedding Guest Outfit

An invitation to someone's big day is the perfect chance to wear that outfit you've been saving for a special occasion, but many women can also struggle when it comes to picking out the right style, colour and cut. Here are some dos and don'ts when it comes to choosing a wedding guest outfit.

White is a big no no

It might be obvious but wearing white to someone else's wedding is a no go area, it's a colour that should be reserved for the bride so don't try and steal the limelight. The same goes for similar shades like ivory, cream and champagne. If you really want to wear white, a pair of white linen pants or a white jacket is acceptable.

Tone down the black

A wedding is a celebration and too much black can put a dampener on the occasion, if you're someone who relies on black and struggles with brighter colours, you can still pull of a wedding look with some black pieces. A black top with a colourful skirt or trendy black and white print will work well, but if you're certain about wearing your trusty little black dress, throw on a pair of brightly coloured shoes, bag and jewellery.

Dress to suit your style

Tailored skirt suits, shift dresses and trouser suits are typical wedding guest outfits for women, but these days many women are choosing something a little less fitted. A strappy dress is the perfect wedding guest outfit, team with a lightweight jacket for day to evening, while a fashionable maxi dress with a shrug is also perfectly acceptable. If you're not keen on heels don't feel obliged to wear them, there are lots of pretty jewelled pumps and flat strappy sandals around right now that are perfect wedding footwear.

It's the little touches that matter

The best way to finish off a wedding guest outfit is by adding some loving little touches with coordinating jewellery, shoes and bag to complement your outfit. Many women love the glamour of a fascinator but don't overdo it, go for a simple hair slide or flower clip. Spruce up a plain dress with a big corsage brooch a quick and easy way of making an outfit dressier. Hats are typically reserved for the mother of the bride or groom.

Wear the right underwear

When choosing what to wear for a wedding, it's important to remember that you might need some new underwear, especially if you're wearing something strapless or with a unique neckline. If your wedding guest outfit is tight fitting you might also want to consider some shapewear to give you a smooth silhouette.
