, you're not a failure. Despite all your exercise and careful eating, there may be other factors working against you. Here are five reasons why that extra weight might be refusing to leave.

1. Stress

We tend to think that stress results in weight loss, since it often diminishes our appetite or leaves us with no time to eat. Busy stress also keeps us constantly active, giving us the impression that we're burning calories non-stop.

But the stress response actually activates a biochemical process that does just the opposite. Instead of speeding up your metabolism, this response slows it down. Rather than burning calories, your body stores more fat for fuel.

In addition, your system releases chemicals which can increase weight gain, especially around your middle. All of this is due to stress-induced survival mode, in which your body tries to preserve and protect itself - usually in the form of storing fat.

2. Medications

Many prescription drugs can cause changes in your body that affect your weight. They may increase your appetite, causing you to eat more calories, though you're still burning the same amount. They may change how your body stores fat, so that more is retained. They may also affect the way your insulin levels fluctuate, creating an imbalance between burning and storing calories.

Typical drugs that can increase your weight include antidepressants, as well as medications for heartburn, diabetes, and high blood pressure. In addition, certain oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies can cause you to retain fluids. Although you're not gaining fat, you'll still be heavier on the scale.

3. Hypothyroidism

Thyroid hormone helps maintain your metabolism. Without sufficient thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), your metabolism slows down. Of course, this means less burning of calories, and more storing of fat.

4. Lack of sleep

As with stress, we tend to equate sleep deprivation with increased activity. We assume that this results in burning more calories than when we're completely unconscious. But sleep loss creates its own stress on your body. Once again, your body goes into survival mode, slowing your metabolism and storing fat.

5. Too many sweets

While sugary indulgences themselves may not put weight on you, they create chemical reactions in your body that can. Most of these treats are made with refined carbohydrates (read: sugars). They cause an increase in your blood sugar level.

When that happens, the hormone insulin is released. Insulin causes blood sugar to be removed from the bloodstream and stored away, rather than burned. This results in a drop in your blood sugar. This in turn often creates a craving for more sugary treats, and the cycle of indulging - and gaining weight - continues.

The basic rule of weight loss is to burn more calories than you eat. If you seem to be the exception to this rule, there may be issues involved besides food and exercise. The good news is that these issues can be identified and dealt with, so that you can one day tell that extra weight good-bye.
