Chiropractic – A License to Print Money?

Chiropractic A License to Print Money?
Many patients and traditional care practitioners view chiropractic as a license to print money. This is because the basic notion of the healing art suggests that in order to maintain good health throughout life, regular check ups and adjustments are necessary. Now, if I were creating a treatment modality for any type of condition and wanted it to be a viable business, I think I would add the very same clause into my bylaws, as well!
Now, before all you chiropractors get all up in arms at this article, I must tell you that I am generally a fan of chiropractic. I believe most care providers are well-intentioned and truly wish the best for their patients. I also do not fault contemporary chiropractors for simply following the rules set by those who came before them
However, I am not a fan of the money generating machine which is represented by the modern chiropractic industry, particularly when patients are threatened or fooled into long term care without understanding the facts of their condition or the true expectations for achieving a cure. Of course you all believe that it is beneficial to continue chiropractic in order to assure good health. However, what are you willing to do in order to get your patients to embrace this same philosophy? Are you content to let them choose based on the facts or will you market to them mercilessly, using whatever means necessary to secure a lasting relationship with their money?
I began my own back pain journey under the care of a chiropractor, rather than a traditional physician. This guy turned out to embody all which I find despicable in the alternative care sector. He was obviously in it for the money and cared little for anything else. As I progressed through treatment, I had the pleasure of meeting many other chiropractors and was treated by literally dozens worldwide over the course of 18 years. Many of these remarkable care providers are still friends, while others are little more than horrible memories of ruthless and money hungry monsters
I have absolutely no problem with making money by helping people. This is often referred to as "doing well by doing good". However, doing good is the key phrase here When a patient goes to a chiropractor, I like the provider to tell them honestly about the mostly symptomatic nature of treatment and the fact that regular adjustments will statistically have to be maintained in order for any relief provided to last. Unfortunately, I rarely hear this Instead, the chiropractor often takes the little time they actually allot the patient to present as sales pitch telling the poor soul that they will NEED to be under continuous care, most likely for life. No choice is given and no promises for relief are made This is pressure tactic usage at its finest and the patients who write to me with literally thousands of such stories have had enough of it all
Now there is good and bad in all professions, as it is often said, but the sad fact remains that you seldom hear of the generous and truly caring chiropractors, compared to the many who seem to see $$$ when they open their eyes every morning. I know these fine examples of a noble profession are out there, but maybe it is in our nature to focus on the negative, particularly when some such specimens truly represent the moral degeneration of the health sciences. Remember that chiropractic is still mostly used to treat back pain. The dorsopathy industry is one of THE most profitable in all medicine, since patients rarely achieve a cure and typically become long term customers, uh, patients
Despite patients having troubles with some chiropractors, the profession, as a whole, continues to grow and expand its influence in the complementary healing arts. In my experience, this is because the truly excellent chiropractors can carry the bad ones. Chiros rank high in patient satisfaction, not because they can enact some magic cure, but instead, because they listen and interact with patients like human beings. This is the main complaint offered about medical doctors Most simply do not seem to even pretend to care or understand. Chiropractors may charge for this caring, but maybe the investment is worth it after all.
So, to summarize, the main changes I would welcome in the chiropractic sector include more transparency in care practices and expectations, fewer instances of threatening patients into what will happen if they do not continue with adjustments and overall, less illogical conclusions about the nature of chronic pain.
