CNA Review: Know Indirect Care or You'll Regret it

Most medical state instructors will watch your move, write down notes on your performance, and decide whether you have passed the CNA certification test or not. It is very known to all that every clinical skill exam has a time frame which provide pressure by the examinees. This pressure causes additional stress which may cause students to make mistakes while demonstrating skills. Even the smallest details of the care, no matter how minor they may seem, can greatly impact the result of your test, which is why an adequate CNA review is absolutely essential to your success. In US and other countries, performing Indirect Care is extremely important because: (1) It is a graded performance, (2) It has separate score ratings, and (3) It greatly affects the testees' overall performance during the clinical skills exam.

As part of CNA review, test takers must pay attention to their behavior in terms of how you communicate with the resident, valuing the residents' rights, providing safety and comfort to the resident, and following proper infection control (standard precautions). Remember: The Nurse Aide Evaluator will always evalaute you based on you conduct towards your patient.

Here are few ideas on how to perform Indirect Care:

1. Communication.

Greet the resident appropriately.

Introduce yourself to the resident

Tell the resident your purpose of being there in resident's room.

Explain each step of the procedure to the resident before performing it.

2. Resident's Rights.

Knock first before you enter resident's room.

Draw the curtain down before you perform the care.

Be cautious of you language when talking to the resident.

Always consider resident preferences.

Do not address resident by their nicknames such as "Honey", "Dear", "Sweetie", etc.

3. Safety and Comfort.

Check resident's bed if he or she is in a safe sleeping position.

Always adjust the resident's bed to a safer one, if necessary.

When rendering a care, always lower the bed.

Use a gait belt when transferring a resident.

When the care is done, always raise the side rails and lock the bed wheels before leaving.

Place the call light within the resident's reach.

4. Infection Control.

Wash your hands before and after performing care.

Use a gloves during perineal care, catheter care, drainage bag care, denture and mouth care (brushing of teeth), assisting with the use of the bedpan, measurement, and the reporting of the urine output

Dispose gloves in the right waste container.

Follow disposal method for soiled items correctly

Avoid direct contact with the floor during bed making

A simple reminder, don't forget to:

1. Knock on the door before entering the resident's room

2. Pull down the curtain (if you are performing perineal care or giving resident a bath)

3. Always put the call light within the resident's reach

4. Wash your hands before and after performing care.

Be mindful for all the rules and standard precautions that you have learned from your CNA training classes. Be consistent on your CNA review. On the actual clinical exam, your evaluator will allow for corrections; in case you forgot something, you are free to correct it, and immediately proceed to the other skills. Just remain calm, focus and confident when performing the care.
