Breast Augmentation: Get An Overview Of The Procedure
The breast enlargement procedure, also called mammoplasty augmentation in the medical world
, is a fairly common cosmetic procedure today. Small breasted women have been trying various methods to increase their bust line for many years, though creams, exercises, injections and through the surgical augmentation method.
Women may have a flatter than desired bust line because of heredity or due to the changes that have occurred post pregnancy and lactation. Pregnancy and the nursing of an infant can cause changes including shrinkage in the size and fullness of a woman's breast due to hormonal fluctuations, milk production and cessation, and therefore becoming stretched out. Many women opt to undergo this surgery in order to enhance their figure.
After the decision is made to have breast augmentation performed, there are various steps to take and choices to make, prior to the actual surgery:
Choose a reputable plastic surgeon. Get referrals from your local medical licensing board, your family physician and family or friends. Make an appointment for an initial consultation in order to obtain all details and to decide if this is the surgeon for you. The plastic surgeon will also want to examine you to determine whether you are a good candidate for the surgery. The best candidates include those that have realistic expectations and are healthy physically and emotionally.
What type of implant? Implants are made of silicone which is either filled with a saline or silicone substance. The implants have various external coatings and come in an array of sizes and shapes. What bra cup size a woman wants to be, as well as how the new size will work in terms of proportion with her height, weight and bone structure are all important considerations.
Where will the incision be placed? The incision may be under the areola, in the armpit area, or in the crease beneath the overhang of the breast. All of these locations are optimum for hiding scarring.
Will the implant be positioned in front of the muscle or behind it? The breast is made up of fatty tissue, milk glands and skin. At times the implant is placed directly behind the tissue while at other times it is located beneath the muscle.
It is important to understand what the surgery entails. How long does it take? How long before being fully recovered? Where is it performed? The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis at a hospital or surgical center under anesthesia. It takes from one to two hours to perform. Swelling is still present for up to six weeks and the final result will be viewable within three months.
Many women have undergone this procedure with great success on both physical and emotional levels. Having a body one feels good about increases confidence and overall self esteem. Not only does the result look good, but it makes one feel good, as well.
