Beirut is the capital of Lebanon and the largest city in the country
. It has about 1.2 million inhabitants and the urban area more than 2 million inhabitants (2007). The city is a financial center, a commercial port and cultural center of major importance to the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. It is located between within Asia, Africa, and EUROPE, which gives it a strategic position in world trade.
The city is with its suburbs, the District of Beirut, Lebanon governorate alone not to be divided into districts. It houses the seat of government and plays a central role in the economy, because of the presence of many firms and large international banks. Beirut is the cultural heart of the region, renowned for its publications and for its unparalleled cultural activities. The city has been named World Book Capital 2009 by UNESCO. Beirut has also been quoted in The New York Times as the first destination to visit in 2009.
Little Phoenician port, and moderately large city of the Roman Empire, famous for its law school, Berytus is destroyed by an earthquake accompanied by a tsunami in 552. She did not regain its place only in modern times. It becomes a city itself in the middle of the nineteenth century including the influx of refugees fleeing the fighting in 1860 in the mountains between Druze and Maronites.
The growth of the city owes much to its port, the first in the region to have been given a quarantine in the nineteenth century, and the choice of Beirut by the Western powers have set up their religious missions, and their universities their trading posts.
Beirut was the focus of an intense civil war of 1975-1990, which resulted in splitting the city into two parts: an eastern part, mainly inhabited by Christians and western part is predominantly inhabited by Muslims. During the summer of 1982, she was subjected by the Israeli army to a seat and a close blockade. Its reconstruction since the 1990s has made it a huge construction site. Beirut, which has survived fifteen years of conflict, has been dubbed "the city that refuses to disappear."
In July 2006, the suburbs and surrounding areas were bombed by the Israeli air force and navy as part of an Israeli army operation. In many neighborhoods, infrastructure and access roads have been destroyed. Since then, their reconstruction and modernization is well underway. The huge construction site downtown has entered its phase of maximum activity.
Beirut lies on a rocky headland that is, midway between the northern and southern borders of Lebanon, a broadening of the coastal plain of the country. The city has two hills: Ashrafiya east and Ras Beirut to the west and between the two, the avenue from the airport drop down to the city center, the oldest quarter.
The south of the city (Bir Hassan, Bois des Pins, Badaro ...) is sandy. Beirut Tang on its eastern side by the river of Beirut whose sources are located in Upper Metn. To the north, the hills plunge abruptly into the sea and ocean depths are large (thus benefiting the port). To the west, the sea is marked by some cliffs (Raouche, Pigeon Rocks), then by a sandy beach (Ramlet el-Baida).
Beirut is famous for its nightlife activity. It is home to many clubs, nightclubs and pubs in neighborhoods Monot, Verdun, Hamra, Gemmay on the ledges of the seaside and in the city center.In Hamra, the street has a multitude of restaurants, cafes and shops. The nightclubs and discos are ubiquitous in Monot Street, making it one of the most turbulent of the city.The corniche of Beirut, along the sea, is frequented by walkers IMPORTANT what time of day or night.

Other bus companies linking Beirut to other cities: Zahle, Tripoli, Saida .The town is crossed by eleven bus lines. The ticket fare is about 1,500 PLA or 0.75 euros, or $ 1. The lines cover 186 km of the town and people even Aley, Jbeil, Broummana and Khalde. They operate from 6am to 18h and 22h to some.
