Now I think that I`m something of an expert on weight loss after all, I`ve been doing it foralmost 20 years! Using the wrong methods I might add, but that`s another story.

When, as a young dancer, I was told by my boss that I needed to lose weight quickly I did what any normal person would do I immediately ate everything that I could get my hands on. Not just the once, but many times over many years. But, in between those times, I tried every new diet on the market if it promised quick results, I was there.

The biscuit diet, shake, cabbage, grapefruit, cerealI`ve tried them all. And I can tell you now they don't work because they`re impossible to stick to.

So, with a career at stake, I took the next logical step. Fasting.

Ah yes I decided, it made complete sense, if I didn`t eat I was bound to lose weight. For the first three days, I drank plenty of water and some fruit, by the fourth day I could hardly get out of bed and had a banging headache. Come day five, I realised how ridiculous the plan was and started eating normally again.

But at least I should have lost some weight nope not a pound, not an ounce, zilch.

You see, by fasting, not only does your body lower your metabolism to preserve you for as long as possible and use up as little energy as it can. You`re also not taking in enough calories to supply you with the energy you need and so you find that you`re using a lot less calories than you normally would as you don't move around as often.

It may seem like a great idea when you want to lose weight quickly, but you would have to keep it going for a lot longer than I did to see results. And by that time your body would have literally eaten itself to try and find the nutrients it needs.

So you would eventually end up thinner, pale, lethargic and ill, your lean muscle will have decreased and so you will need fewer calories than before. When you start eating normally again, the weight will come back quickly and you will end up way fatter than when you started.
