. Most people see small girls in their minds when they think of these types of undergarments, but the truth is, these items are also worn with some garments by adult women.
Petticoats make the skirt of the dress appear to be fuller and more pronounced. Women like dresses for girls that need them because the exaggerated size of the skirt makes the waist of the woman appear to be smaller. These garments also look very feminine, and can even be made to look playful, and flirty.
The dresses for girls that require the individual to wear this type of undergarment were once very popular items to wear. During the 1950s the outfits that required a girl to wear a petticoat to make the skirt stand out away from the body were at the height of fashion. Poodle skirts are one example of dresses for girls that required them, but the poodle skirt required a small version, because it was not supposed to stand out to far.
During the times of the old film stars like Shirley Temple, dresses for girls that required these items were very popular. The more formal the occasion that a little girl was attending, the more fullness the crinoline was required to have. Some of these garments had a crinoline under them that was so full, the outfit looked like it had a row of ruffles under it, and at times it did.
When the dresses for girls that needed these items were short enough that the undergarment was going to show, the designers often placed lace, or satin trim, around the edges of the material the slip was made of. This made the full undergarment appear to be a row of ruffles under the garment the child was wearing. The outfits that were this short, were never seen on people over the age of twelve.
You still see little girls that are in beauty pageants wearing these garments, but you do not see them being worn every day by children any more. These little outfits are very formal, and not practical for the children to wear on a regular basis. They are however used as Easter dresses for girls that are under the age of nine. The children wear them to church and to the celebrations their families attend on this religious holiday. Most small girls wear one of these garments at least once in their lives.
Dresses for girls that need petticoats under them are generally only worn for special occasions or as pageant wear.
