What Happens During Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation offers women with the ability to change the size and shape of their breasts

Anesthesia Is First
The first step in the breast augmentation procedure is anesthesia. Medications are given to you to make you comfortable. This generally is general anesthesia, to put you to sleep during the procedure. This may be done through an intravenous sedation process.
Making the Incision
The next thing for your doctor to do is to make an incision. Often, the doctors plan to do this in such a way as to hide the incision and scar from view. You should discuss this option with your doctor prior to going into the procedure. You may be able to choose form an inframammary incision, located along the bottom edge of the breast or a transaxillary incision, made near the armpit. Other options, including the periareolar incision, near the nipples, are options.
Insertion of the Implant
The next step is to insert the breast implant into place. This is done after a pocket is created usually under the pectoral muscle. Another option is to place it directly behind the breast tissue and over the muscle. The method of choice is up to your doctor as well as your desires. Things like the size of the enlargement and your body type may make one option better than others.
Closing Up
After it is put into place, the doctor will then close the incision made using layered sutures. This helps to minimize scarring. Skin adhesives or other surgical tapes are often used to close up the skin. The incision lines will fade over a period of time. You will then move into recovery and come out of the anesthesia over a period of a few minutes. You will likely feel tired and out of it for a few hours and then you will be on your way to healing.
Discuss the options with your doctor regarding the procedure. Tell him or her about any specific desires you have when it comes to breast augmentation. You may be able to choose the type of implant, the location, and the incision location used during this process.
