Minimizing Scarring With Breast Augmentation

One of the concerns many women have when considering breast augmentation is the worry

and concern that scars will make it very evident they had the procedure done. If you want to improve the way your breasts look, the last thing you want to have are scars in the area. The good news is that there are treatment options for this. In fact, right from the start, you may find that it is possible for you to avoid scarring that is visible. Be sure to talk to your doctor about your desires to minimize scarring from the start.

Why Scars Are a Concern

Anytime the skin is cut open, no matter if it is from a fall or from an incision, there is the risk of a scar developing. With breast augmentation, the incisions are likely to leave scars, simply because the skin must patch itself and re-grow over the cut in order to heal. With this procedure, the size of the incision is significantly smaller than what many people expect. However, there is still likely to be some type of scarring present.

Location Matters

One of the discussions you will have with your doctor leading up to this procedure is the location of the incision. It is possible simply to work around the risk of a scar being noticeable by choosing the right location. There are several options to consider. For example, the doctor may make an inframammary incision. This is located in the lower crease of the breast and is very well hidden. Another location is around a portion of the areola. This is the dark-colored portion of the nipple. This type of incision, called a periareolar incision, is a very good way to hide the scar. Yet another option, and perhaps the most significant way of hiding it, is to have the incision in the armpit. This type of incision, called the transaxillary incision, makes it easy to disassociate the scarring from the procedure.

Healing Matters

It is possible to minimize the appearance of scars by simply using lotions on the incision locations. However, before you do this, ensure that your doctor agrees to it. Keep in mind that this is not a simple cut, but a deep one. If you apply any type of topical treatment to the area, it can very well lead to an infection developing. This is not a good thing.

The good news is that with breast augmentation, you likely will only have small scars rather than larger or obvious ones. Talk to your doctor about these concerns. He or she will provide you with information and advice on how to protect and prevent your skin from having obvious signs of this procedure.
