What Everyone Should Know About Compression Garments And Liposuction

Liposuction (also referred to as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is pretty popular as far as cosmetic surgeries go

. For twelve out of the past thirteen years, this surgery has topped the lists as the most popular cosmetic surgery in America. Even last year, when a recession-sparked dip in popularity bumped it from the top spot, nearly 350,000 people underwent the surgery. It seems that everywhere one looks, one can hear about members of the rich and famous who have undergone the procedure, and everywhere one goes one sees advertisements for cosmetic surgery centers offering the procedure.

Despite this large amount of popularity, though, there are relatively few people who actually fully understand the procedure. Most people know that the surgery removes excess fat from the body. Some people even know that the fat is removed by suctioning it out through a tiny hollow tube called a cannula. Relatively few people know much about the recovery process.

One necessary part of recovering from a lipoplasty is the compression garment. Compression garments are tight-fitting, elastic pieces of clothing that a person is supposed to wear during recovery from a liposuction. They sometimes look something like a girdle or like biking shorts. Exactly where a person wears a garment and how large it is will depend on the exact nature of one's surgery.

There are a few reasons why it is important to wear a compression garment during one's recovery. Most of the most popular lipoplasty techniques use something called tumescent fluid. This fluid is injected in large amounts into the target area. The introduction of this large amount of fluid causes the fat to swell up and become firm, which makes it easier to remove and sculpt. All of this fluid has to drain out of the body after the surgery. The pressure provided by a compression garment encourages the excess fluids to leave the body quickly.

A second important reason to wear the garments is that the garments help your body to heal in the right shape. The pressure helps to hold your body in a trim, appealing position during the healing process, which makes it more likely that you will get the results that you really want from your surgery.

It is important that you follow your doctor's orders with regard to the wearing of your compression garment. Some people find the compression garments irritating or uncomfortable and stop wearing them too soon. This is a mistake, because it will actually slow your recovery process and have a negative effect on your overall results.
