Liposuction Isn't Just A Woman Thing. A Lot Of Men Are Trying It Too

It's common today for women to be concerned with the appearance of their bodies

. For whatever reason, it is usually women who try to lose weight, and we generally think of women when we hear about liposuction. It may be surprising that an increasing number of men are turning to this procedure as well.

Why have men traditionally not been likely to get liposuction? Although there are probably as many reasons as there are men, a few common societal pressures have probably influenced women to lean toward cosmetic surgery and men to turn away from it.

To begin with, the advertising industry is what tells people how to look, even going so far as to define what the human body should look like in its most ideal form. Women are especially susceptible to advertising and are more likely to want to get liposuction to look a little more like the advertised ideal.

Men have never been as susceptible to advertising in the same way, but many are willing to learn about liposuction to remove problematic or embarrassing fat that they can't get off through diet and exercise alone.

Men don't usually have fat removed from the same places as women, and this has to do with the differences in male and female physiology. Generally, women tend to put on fat in the thighs, butt, and hips. Men often have a harder time with fat accumulation of the belly and love handles. In some cases, men have fat removed from their breasts as well.

One of the problems with doing liposuction on men is that their commonly fatty areas tend to be over a larger area of the body than the common areas for women. This means that the procedure can take longer and be more involved.

Another problem is that men's fat tends to be connected with fibrous tissues that make fat removal more difficult. Again, this can take more time than a similar procedure on a woman.

For some men, the decision to get liposuction can seem like a shameful one. Some feel that they should be able to control their bodies on their own and others worry that getting cosmetic surgery is not a masculine thing to do.

Despite these misgiving, more and more men are doing it these days and many more will probably join their ranks in the coming years. It is not something that need be restricted to women only. Anyone who wants to remove a little fat from a problem area can learn about liposuction and consider its possibilities.
