Weight Loss Vs Fat Loss - The Facts
If you've ever spoken to somebody who's dieting aggressively, they will often tell you that they've lost fifteen pounds in the last two weeks, or that they are looking to lose thirty pounds over the next two months, or some such other figure. The key question, however, is fifteen pounds of what? See, there is a crucial difference between generic weight loss and fat loss, and it's a difference that is often overlooked by dieters. In today's article we're going to look at what this difference is, and help you understand why it's crucial to know what you're doing so as to achieve long term success.
First, let's go over some basics. Your body is made up of a variety of tissues. You are made of blood, bone, organs such as your livers, kidneys and lungs, as well as muscle, bodyfat, water, and so on. When you add the weight of all of these together, you get your total weight. This is the number you see when you step on the scale. That is why people who are serious about dieting tend to not consider this number as the most important numberit includes the weight of their bones, clearly something they are not trying to lose.
Instead, it's more beneficial to focus on the total weight of your bodyfat. While there are different types of bodyfat, for our purposes we can simply stick to that term and make it one homogeneous group under the umbrella term of bodyfat'. If you can determine how much your bodyfat weighs, you can figure out your bodyfat percentage by dividing that number by your total weight.
Bodyfat percentage is a more useful indicator of how healthy you are. Lean athletes might have less than 10% bodyfat, while normal male athletes are probably between 10-18%. Regular guys would then fall in the range of 18-23% bodyfat, and above that you would be considered overweight. For women, the numbers are slightly different. An average woman might be between 25-30% bodyfat, and above that she would be considered overweight.
Where do you tend to see these bodyfat percentages? On those special scales that sent electric currents through your body to determine your bodyfat composition. In order to figure out how much fat you have you simply figure out the percentage from your total body weight. So say you are a 200lb male with 25% bodyfat. Doing the math, you would see that you have 50lbs of bodyfat and the rest is your lean body mass, composed of all the bones and muscle and blood and such.
