Research has shown that diets high in protein are more successful because not only do they cause your hunger to remain satiated for longer, they also tend to cause you to eat less calories, they cause greater fat loss and you tend to retain lean body mass. Further, higher protein amounts tend to stabilize your blood glucose compared to diets that are high in carbs, which is another way to help yourself maintain it.
Finally, a good diet should contain plenty of vegetables and fruits, though remember that some fruits are surprisingly high in calories. You should try to eat veggies that have plenty of roughage to help clean out your intestines, and if possible you should also make sure to get plenty of Omega 3's through fish oil or supplements.
Beyond that, variations can be whateveryou like as long as it helps you stick to the diet. Those are the basics that everybody should adhere to, and deviation will usually only come at your own loss.
