Okay, here it is: the secret to everlasting weight loss is...
Diet and exercise!
What"s that? No applause? No cheers? What do you mean, you already knew that?
Here"s something else that"s no secret: North America"s waistline is bulging. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity has increased by 60 per cent in the US over the last twenty years. For children, it"s even worse""childhood obesity has tripled in the last three decades. Some people blame defective genes or the drop in cigarette smoking, but those are very minor factors compared to the major cause: poor diet and minimal exercise.
Now, I am not one of those individuals who gets personally offended when people make unhealthy living choices. I have no qualms with anyone who"s happy cheeseburgering themselves to death. However, I am concerned with those who say that they want to lose weight, who say that they"d give anything to be thin, yet refuse to do anything about it. Or worse, they"ll begin the diet-and-exercise regime and then slip off the wagon the instant they begin to see results. Diet and exercise are not easy, granted. However, people face many challenges in day to day life""completing university, for example, or working hard to further a career""and seem to have better success. This implies that lack of motivation or willpower are not the prime factors which inhibit weight loss. So, why do people have such a hard time losing those pounds""and keeping them off? The reason is that the battle they"re fighting is not actually against the bulge, but against a part of themselves.
That"s a bold claim, and I"m sure there are a lot of irate people swearing at their computer screens right now. So allow me to qualify that statement. First of all, the key word is "part". Of course there"s part of them who would love to have a Hollywood body""as goes for almost any of us. Secondly, that other part (the one that doesn"t want to lose weight) is often buried within their subconscious, and thus unbeknown to even themselves. And, as with all thoughts located within the subconscious, it is based on emotion as opposed to logic or pragmatism.
So why would they subconsciously not want to lose the weight? Well, the precise answer to that may differ from to person, but often it has to do with a certain sense of security that comes with being overweight. One chief example""and one that generally pertains more to women than men""is that it detracts attention from the opposite sex. Classically, women who have had a negative male presence in their lives and are now fearful or mistrusting of men use their bodies as a way of defering male interest. Again, this is generally done on a subconscious level.
This leads to the next question: if diet and exercise don"t work because subconsciously these people don"t actually want to lose weight, is there anything that they can do? And the answer to that is, simply, yes. This of it this way: if the problem is in their body (being overweight due to lifestyle) then the solution must target their body as well (diet/exercise). If the problem is in their mind, the same philosophy applies. Fortunately, there are ways of managing and overcoming issues embedded within the subconscious. Arguably the most effective way is through hypnosis.
The beauty of hypnosis""and what sets it apart from other mental/emotional regimens like counselling or psychotherapy""is that it has the ability to uncover that which lies within the subconscious mind. This enables the individual to get to the emotional root of the problem (in this case, excessive weight) very quickly. As previously mentioned, the subconscious forms thoughts based on emotion as opposed to logic, which means just understanding where the problem comes from isn"t equivalent to solving it. That is why hypnosis employs powerful motivational suggestion (on the part of the hypnotherapist) in order to expel the negative thoughts completely or else transform them into positive ideas that promote a happy, healthy lifestyle. From this point, diet/exercise become far easier and with a much higher success rate.
And so, to everyone out there who wants to lose weight""or who a part of, at least, wants to lose weight""there is a way of doing it that will ensure the results you desire. If diet/exercise is the car that will take you down the road of weight loss and self-improvement, hypnosis is the gasoline that will allow the car to run.
