Most people know that the 50th anniversary of a wedding is the golden anniversary
, and the traditional gift is gold. Another easy one is the 25th anniversary, the silver anniversary, and of course, the traditional gift is silver. How many of the other wedding anniversary gifts by year can you recall?
How did this tradition get started, and how many people still find it important enough to follow? In the twenty first century, especially in the United States, it is safe to assume only a small minority find it important enough to strictly adhere to. Those who do, take pride in honoring tradition and tend to find a genuine satisfaction in doing so.
Nobody can say exactly when the tradition began, but we know we have the Germans to thank, (or to blame, depending on your point of view). Several hundred years ago, when German couples would reach their 25th wedding anniversary, family and friends would celebrate and present the wife with a silver wreath.
The celebration was not only for the marriage surviving, but for both members being alive. People did not live as long as we do today. Upon the very rare event of a 50th wedding anniversary, the wife was given another wreath; this time one of gold.
As time progressed, more gifts were matched up with more years. There are different charts for different cultures, which maintain this tradition, so listed below, you will find the wedding gifts in the tradition of the United States. The paper anniversary is the first one and cotton is for the second year. Year three is leather, while year 4 is all about the fruits and the flowers.
The next year, number 5 is the year of wood, while the 6th anniversary is all about iron. The 7th year is wool and year 8 is for bronze gifts. Anniversary number 9 is the year for pottery, while ten is easy to remember; tin. Year 11 is the year of steel, and the 12th anniversary is for silk. Lucky 13 is lace, while the 14th year used to be ivory. However killing elephants is evil, so an alternate has taken its place; opal. Year 15 is the Crystal anniversary.
Do not look now, but we start to count in fives. The twentieth anniversary is the china year, while year twenty five belongs, of course, to silver. Year thirty is pearl and we have another substitution for the thirty fifth wedding anniversary. Coral is a beautiful living thing, so jade has taken its place. Year number forty belongs to the ruby and the 45th year is all about the sapphire. Who remembers year 50? (It is gold, of course.)
